Robbed and pillaged by European and US imperialists for 500 years, Bolivia is still South America's richest country with its poorest people. In 2005 the nation's indigenous majority elected a socialist government under one of their own, President Evo Morales, promising to use the nation's resources to bring education, health care, sustainable development to its people, and pursuing a policy of regional cooperation with Venezuela, Cuba, Brazil and other neighbors.
