The U.S. has tried to undermine the socialist government in Venezuela ever since it was elected to office in 1998. But Donald Trump threatens to overthrow the left by force. Presidents Bush and Obama “succeeded in varying degrees in containing the left, then rolling it back in the last few years, without these kinds of threats of military intervention,” said Mark Weisbrot, of the Washington-based Center for Economic and Policy Research.
