Because his legal counsel has been absent from his court appearances, Stewart has been held without the right to a speedy trial that the constitution guarantees. He recorded this message from Rikers Island in October 2022. His experience is a common one not only on Rikers Island, but throughout the mass incarceration system in the U.S. Despite the audio quality of the message, his words are still powerful.
