Lower Retirement Age to Free Up Jobs for the Young

With 11 million jobs missing from the American economy, “increasing the retirement age under Social Security is exactly the wrong way to go,” says economist James K. Galbraith, of the University of Texas, at Austin. “It would simply force older workers, including many unemployed workers, into a futile competition for available jobs.” Galbraith predicts President Obama’s deficit reduction commission will not produce a consensus on Social Security when its recommendations are released, next month, “in which case the best thing would be for it simply to die.”

The Democratic Debacle

Cynthia McKinney, Margaret Kimberley, Bill Quigley, Kevin Alexander Gray, and Antony Monteiro examine the cause and consequences of last week’s Republican electoral sweep.

Black Agenda Radio on the Progressive Radio Network is hosted by Glen Ford and Nellie Bailey. A new edition of the program airs every Monday at 4:00pm ET on PRN. Length: One hour.
