Community control of police activists in Chicago are challenging virtually the entire city council in this month’s elections. Frank Chapman, co-chair of the Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, said 78 city council candidates and four mayoral aspirants now support a Civilian Police Accountability Commission. The Alliance claims to have mobilized 55,000 activists in all wards 50 of the city. “We’re not pushing any candidate as a politician,” said Chapman. “We’re pushing an issue.”
