Black Agenda Radio · Albina Community Fights for Restitution of Seized Property

We now turn to a discussion of Albina, a Black community in Portland, Oregon which was devastated by so-called urban renewal in the 1950s and 1960s. The final blow came in the early 1970s, when an estimated 300 homes and businesses in Albina were taken when the city of Portland and Emanuel Hospital said the landed was needed for a hospital expansion, an expansion which never took place. We speak with Byrd, whose family were displaced. She is among the Emanuel Displaced Persons Association 2 plaintiffs who filed a lawsuit seeking restitution. Byrd joins us from Portland.
