BLM National Leadership Focused on Money and Careers

Breya Johnson, co-chair of Black Youth Project 100 (BYP100) in Washington, DC, said her organization enjoys a ā€œworking relationshipā€ with the local Black Lives Matter chapter, but views BLM’s national leadership as ā€œmore about career interestsā€ and raising money ā€œthan it is about Black liberation.ā€ BYP100 sees mutual aid as crucial during the Covid-19-induced economic crisis, ā€œbecause the government failed us.ā€ ā€œHow we keep us safe is critical,ā€ said Johnson, a masters student at George Washington University.

Black Is Back Coalition: ā€œBlack Power Mattersā€

ā€œThe struggle has to be more than simply a declaration of our significance as human beings, as in the term ā€˜Black Lives Matter,ā€™ā€ said Omali Yeshitela, chairman of the Black Is Back Coalition for Social Justice, Peace and Reparations. That’s why, for the 12th consecutive year, the Coalition last week marched on the White House under the banners of ā€œBlack Power Matters,ā€ ā€œDown With Colonialism,ā€ and ā€œBlack Community Control of the Police.ā€ Said Yeshitela: ā€œThe masses of people need and want leadership.ā€

The Mulatta in White Brazilian and US Imaginations

ā€œThe mixed Black figure, the mulattaā€ is ā€œa central focus of containing and managing Blackness and upholding whitenessā€ in both Brazil and the United States, said Jasmine Mitchell, professor of American Studies and Media and Communication at the State University of New York at Old Westbury. Brazilian media popularize ā€œideologies of racial mixing with the hope that the nation will become less Black,ā€ said Mitchell, author of the book, ā€œImagining the Mulatta: Blackness in U.S. and Brazilian Media.ā€
