The president of predominantly Black Hampton University debased himself by speaking at Liberty University, founded by the Christian racist Jerry Falwell.
“Black misleaders have convinced the masses that neo-colonialism is the reasonable and viable replacement for colonialism.”
“…Jomo Kenyatta formed an excellent revolution without education and all he did as the end thing was tell the people…I’m your brother, I helped you lead the revolution now I’m going to oppress you… Papa Doc in Haiti…he moved all of the White people out and he took over being the oppressor because of no education…Jomo Kenyatta is not called a never revolutionary but an ex-revolutionary…so is Papa Doc… Without education you have neo-colonialism instead of colonialism…you might get people caught up in the emotionalist movement…and because they are poor they’ll want more and before we know it we will have capitalist and before you know it we’ll have Negro imperialist…” Fred Hampton– “The Importance of Education Prior To Action”
The Black misleadership class is a very dangerous thing. Glen Ford from Black Agenda Report says that, “…a half century ago the aspiring Black bourgeoisie sought to find their niche in the power structure through a pact with the real corporate bourgeoisie and the Democratic Party. This Black Misleadership Class has dominated Black politics since the assassination of ‘democratic socialist’ Dr. Martin Luther King and the U.S. government’s murderous assault on Black radicals.” Many in this class have taken on the responsibility of “educating” the lumpenproletariat but have worked on behalf of the ruling elite to tranquilize and mis-educate them. They have convinced the masses that neo-colonialism is the reasonable and viable replacement for colonialism. Black capitalism is the liberating replacement for capitalism.
A recent example of the dangers of this group are exemplified by Dr. William R. Harvey, President of Hampton University. He was the keynote speaker at Liberty University's 2019 Convocation. For those who do not know, Hampton University is one of America’s preeminent HBCU’s. Liberty University is a so-called Christian university founded by televangelist and founder of the Moral Majority, Jerry Falwell. The dichotomy between these two institutions could not be starker. The fact that Falwell founded the Moral Majority, an organization that weaponized religion in order to validate and promote a racist, pro-apartheid, homophobic and anti-women’s right to choose political agenda, under the guise of “Christianity,” should be enough. But, there’s an even a more nefarious arc of history with Falwell.
“The Moral Majority weaponized religion in order to validate and promote a racist, pro-apartheid, homophobic and anti-women’s right to choose political agenda.”
Falwell was a great Christian. He was a great Christian bigot, great Christian racist, great Christian homophobe and great Christian segregationist. He blamed the 9-11 attacks on, “…the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, …”
Four years after the Browndecision, Falwell preached a sermon entitled “Segregation or Integration: Which?” Falwell said, “The true Negro does not want integration…integration will destroy our race eventually. In one northern city a pastor friend of mine tells me that a couple of opposite race live next door to his church as man and wife.” Falwell called Dr. King a Communist saying, “It is very obvious that the Communists, as they do in all parts of the world, are taking advantage of a tense situation in our land and are exploiting every incident to bring about violence and bloodshed.”
Falwell appeared on ABC’s Nightlineto defend the apartheid South African regime. He opposed the congressional sanctions bill that targeted the racist South African regime. He supported Mangosuthu Buthelezi and Inkatha against the ANC and Nelson Mandela.
According to a statement released by Liberty University after Dr. Harvey’s speech, “He (Harvey) also told the audience of his belief in the goodness of God. “I want you to know that the Lord has ordered my steps. I could not have done the things that I have done in my life if He had not ordered my steps…” The problem with this statement is that the God that Harvey is referencing as an African American is the very same God that we prayed to for deliverance from the bigotry, hatred, oppression and racism that the Falwell’s encourage through their sermons, school policies and political agenda.
“Falwell called Dr. King a Communist.”
Falwell, Jr. picks right up where his father left off. In a Washington Postinterview Falwell, Jr. said, “It’s such a distortion of the teachings of Jesus to say that what he taught us to do personally — to love our neighbors as ourselves, help the poor — can somehow be imputed on a nation… It’s a distortion of the teaching of Christ to say Jesus taught love and forgiveness and therefore the United States as a nation should be loving and forgiving, and just hand over everything we have to every other part of the world. That’s not what Jesus taught. You almost have to believe that this is a theocracy to think that way, to think that public policy should be dictated by the teachings of Jesus.”
This is dangerous stuff but it’s not new. This is the basis of “The Monroe Doctrine,” “American Exceptionalism,” “Manifest Destiny” and “American Internationalism.” Falwell, Jr. is correct. American policy should not be dictated by the teachings of Jesus. It should be based on the fundamental understanding of morality, justice and equality that lies at the core of every great belief system in world.
He also said, “In the earthly kingdom, the responsibility is to choose leaders who will do what’s best for your country.” That’s code language. Since White Americans dominate the political processes in this country, they don’t have to speak in overt racist rhetoric. They can speak in code, in the context of “us” and “your country,” since many of them like the Falwell’s see America as “their country.”
It is quite dangerous for Harvey to speak at Liberty University. As with Jay-Z’s deal with the NFL, Harvey was there as a buffer and capitalist, on his own behalf, to serve his own interests and those of the established order. Both are metaphors and distractions from the real issue: the dangers of Black capitalism and from there, as Chairman Fred said, “Negro imperialists or neo-colonialists.” Manning Marable wrote in How Capitalism Underdeveloped Black America, “A decisive component of this underdevelopment process within the periphery is the nonwhite elite [or Black misleadership class]. These elite(s) play a very important role. They serve ‘…as a necessary yet dependent buffer between those who wield power and those who have none. Within popular culture, it is the nonwhite mouthpiece of the new order, articulating in the media and in the various aesthetic forums the ideals of the masters.’”
For Hampton University’s President, Dr. William R. Harvey, to speak at Liberty University’s Convocation, expressing his appreciation and admiration for the Falwell’s and extolling the “virtues” of Christian bigots, Christian racists, Christian homophobes and Christian segregationists, is very dangerous. His presence at the university and his speech validates their hatred and racism. He serves as the nonwhite mouthpiece of the new order. Or, maybe just more of the same ol’, same ol’ as the Black misleadership class shuffles along, scratching their heads and rides again.
