The Black Church spawned militant resistance to white supremacy as well as a politics of accommodation to white rule. “Dr King’s SCLC exposed “the sheer violence of racism that is just underneath the surface of white America,” said Gary Dorrien, professor of Social Ethics at Union Theological Seminary, in New York City, and author of “Breaking White Supremacy: Martin Luther King Jr and the Black Social Gospel.” Booker T. Washington’s disciples in the Black clergy resisted the social gospel.
