Letters from Our Readers

This week corporate Democrats and resistance to them were on your minds. We share your letters for “Corporate Democrats Want to Run Against Trump-like Republicans Forever” and “Freedom Rider: The Real Resistance Begins.”

“Corporate Democrats Want to Run Against Trump-like Republicans Forever” by Glen Ford argues that race-based politics allow the corporate rulers to ignore demands for economic relief and peace.

Drew King writes:

“Thank you for writing this crucial analysis and having the audacity to state the truth: “Race-based campaigns serve both corporate parties.”

“As a young communist, I'm staring at these hoards of 'progressive/woke' identitarians on social media who are outraged that millions of working class whites in rural America didn't vote for Joe Biden, who is selling the status quo, corporate diversity and woke capitalism.  Why would working class whites vote for Biden who offers absolutely no bold policies to improve their material lives or conditions ?

“It sounds kind of like wondering why they didn't just go to their local Barnes and Noble to purchase a copy of 'How to be an anti-racist' before the election. Millions of those people might well have voted for a Bernie Sanders instead of Trump.”

In “Freedom Rider: The Real Resistance Begins” Margaret Kimberley for a genuine resistance to hold the probable Biden administration accountable.

Paul Billings writes:

“Terrific piece. As you point out, throughout his circa five decades of ‘public service,’ Joe Biden (aka ‘Credit card Joe’) has been a dependable representative of the State, carrying water for the Pentagon, Military contractors, insurance companies, large banks and Wall St. Biden’s fealty to the lords of corporate capital were handsomely rewarded; the Biden/Harris campaign received the majority of Wall St. campaign donations, including Michael Bloomberg’s $100 million pledge as well as support from prominent members of the military and intelligence agencies. No doubt, this reflects the anxiety the ruling elite feel about Trump’s inept, incompetent handling of COVID-19 crisis and his erratic positions on foreign policy- exhibit A being his exit from the JCPOA and the humiliating vote at the UNSC on Iran last September, where the US was completely isolated.

“This election was held at a time when large cracks are appearing in American Capitalism.  In 2008 the US experienced the largest financial crash since the Great Depression- a direct consequence of decades of neoliberal economic policies- multiple tax cuts for the wealthy, financial deregulation, attacks on the poor & labor, job outsourcing, spending astronomical amounts of taxpayer money bailing out Wall Street and subsidizing the Pentagon and war. Since that time, none of the structural problems giving rise to this crisis were resolved and returned with a vengeance from the Coronavirus pandemic. Indeed, the US faces the largest economic crisis since the Great Depression, with high unemployment and millions of American families faced with financial ruin, eviction from their homes, food insecurity and loss of medical insurance. In contrast, Congress has been very generous with Wall St and American billionaires. To put this in perspective, the FED has pumped circa $10 trillion of taxpayer-backed funds to Wall St for share buybacks and to purchase toxic corporate debt and mortgage-backed securities. As a result, the net worth of the nation’s billionaires has increased circa $500 billion since April.”

Confronting the Democratic Party remains essential to any serious progressive movement. Avoiding falling into their strategy requires ideological clarity on the part of the Left.
