Rent Regulation and the Housing Crisis for Black New Yorkers
Black Agenda Radio with Margaret Kimberley
19 Jun 2026
🖨️ Print Article

Many apartments in New York City are protected by rent regulations which determine how much rent can be charged and how much increases, if any, can be. These regulations are under constant attack by landlords, who even withhold nearly 60,000 apartments off the market in hopes of ending rent regulations with a court decision. Leah Goodridge is a New York City-based attorney, housing advocate, writer, and member of the City Planning Commission. She discusses this issue, which impacts working and low-income New Yorkers, Black people in particular, and why the end of regulations would be devastating.
