Charisse Burden Stelly, professor of Africana Studies and Political Science at Carleton College, said the long US history of red-baiting led to lethal repression of radicals in the 1960s. “When you have Black radical insurgencies like the Panther Party, there’s already a repressive apparatus in place to crush them,” said Burden-Stelly, who recently wrote an article in the Black political journal Soul on “anti-foreignness, anti-radicalism and anti-Blackness” during the McCarthy era.
