Political Mafia Suspected in Marielle Franco Murder

Only two people have been arrested in the March, 2018 assassination of Marielle Franco, the Black activist and city councilwoman in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. “Everyone believes this was carried out by militias” which “operate in Rio very much like classic mafias,” said Stephanie Reist, a Rio-based writer and researcher. “Many militia members are current or former police or military,” said Reist, who wrote an article for Jacobinmagazine titled, “Finding Marielle Franco’s Killers.”
