Mumia and Supporters Jubilant Over Prospects for New Trial

“For the first time in years, our forces are building again, marching again,” said Mumia Abu Jamal, the nation’s best known political prisoner. “Common Pleas Court Judge Leon Tucker reinstated all [Abu Jamal’s] appeals that occurred over the last 15 years,” creating “an opportunity for Mumia to actually get back into court and argue for a new trial,” said Prison Radio producer Noelle Hanrahan. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner’s decision not to block appeals means “a case that was believed to be open and shut, by the powers that be, is now being reopened,” said Johanna Fernandez, of the Campaign to Bring Mumia Home. Pam Africa, of International Family and Friends of Mumia Abu Jamal, credited the breakthrough to the “power of the people working with the lawyers – everybody pulled together.”
