Study Shows NYPD Stops More About Race Than Crime

An independent study of New York City’s massive stop-and-frisk policies shows police often lack even the pretense of legal justification for accosting pedestrians on the streets. The study reveals a “tremendous, disturbing, racialized pattern of illegal stops,” says Darius Charney, lead attorney for the Center for Constitutional Rights’ suit against the NYPD. “Once the stop occurs,” says Charney, “Black and Latino individuals are treated much more harshly” than whites.

Juvenile Detention Rapes Not Staff’s Fault, Says Federal Panel

Despite findings that one out of eight inmates of the nation’s juvenile detention centers are sexually victimized each year, a federal panel claims the abuse is “rare” and absolves staff of most wrongdoing. “If one in eight public school students were sexually abused, nobody would call that rare,” says Linda McFarlane, of Just Detention International, an non-profit advocate for detainees’ rights.

Black On Black March on White House

In a little over a year of existence, the Black Is Back Coalition for Social Justice, Peace and Reparations has forged “a non-sectarian kind of unity” among diverse groups of Blacks on the left, says coalition chairman Omali Yeshitela. Black Is Back holds a rally and march on the White House, November 13.

Bruce Dixon examines the “pimping” of Black bloggers, and Dr. Jared Ball reviews the new film “COINTELPRO 101.”
