Western Mercenaries and Corporations Pouring Into Libya
A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford
Western mercenaries are flocking to Libya, to protect the hordes of western businessmen that have descended on the country. An historic crime becomes a “gold rush” for those that destroyed the society’s infrastructure and covet her resources. “Libya’s nominal new rulers in the Transitional National Council are in a rush to sell off the nation's birthright before they've even got it in their hands.”
Western Mercenaries and Corporations Pouring Into Libya
A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford
“The French made sure they were first in line to get a piece of the spoils.”
Western security firms – a polite term for mercenary outfits – are cramming planes into Libya to make the country safe for an invasion of western capitalists, the real beneficiaries of NATO’s war. So frenzied is the crush of war capitalists and their hired gunmen seeking to cash in on the Libyan catastrophe, the New York Times tell us a $5 cab ride from Tripoli’s airport to downtown hotels now costs $800. The head of the U.S.-Arab Chamber of Commerce calls it a “gold rush,” as officials of the government established by force of NATO airpower lay out the red carpet for the foreign hordes. Libya’s nominal new rulers in the Transitional National Council are in a rush to sell off the nation's birthright before they've even got it in their hands.
The huge influx of big, burley western mercenaries is most ironic, since the so-called rebels’ principal call to arms was that Moammar Gaddafi was maintained in power by paid gunmen from sub-Saharan Africa. They used the false specter of a black mercenary presence to turn the rebellion into a race war that claimed the lives of untold thousands of black Libyans and immigrant workers – an ethnic cleansing that no doubt still unfolds and will forever mark the new regime as racist to its core. That same regime now embraces a real world invasion of Euro-American mercenaries. White and money, indeed, makes right, in the new Libya.
The bodies of the dead had not yet been buried in Sirte, the seaside city virtually leveled by months of NATO bombing – and where all of the citizens’ vehicles were stolen by riotous rebel gunmen – before trade delegations from France and Britain began descending on Tripoli. The French, who were so eager to be first in aggressive, unprovoked war, made sure they were also first in line to get a piece of the spoils. A delegation of businessmen from 80 French companies arrived a whole week before their Libyan hosts’ gunmen butchered Col. Gaddafi and scores of other prisoners. We’re sure the French raised glasses of champagne to mark the occasion.
“White and money, indeed, makes right, in the new Libya.”
Of course, foreigners and their money were all over Tripoli before the Europeans and Americans decided that a Shock and Awe assault on Libya would put them in a better position to deal with the uncertainties of the Arab Spring. Foreign investment in Libya increased 25-fold between 2002 and 2010. Gaddafi, by all accounts, had come to an accommodation with foreign capital. European and Asian corporations were transforming the face of Tripoli. Corporate logos on countless construction sites testified to Gaddafi’s determination to “normalize” relations with the imperial powers and the world in general. In recent years, he released from prison hundreds of Islamic fighters, as part of that “normalization.” It would be his undoing.
So, before NATO’s war, there was no question of western access to Libya – and certainly no threat of withholding oil. It is not access, but the terms of access, that makes the difference between war and peace with imperialism. For the Americans, the French and the British, the price of peace is one’s national sovereignty. Oh – and keeping out the Chinese, 30,000 of whom were forced to leave Libya when the bombs started falling. It is doubtful that they will be back in such numbers, until after the current regime is, itself, overthrown.

Why did China abstain
I agree with everything Glenn said, but no one has ever explained to me why china and russia allowed this to happen? WHY?!!! I have no theory on this, and for me thats saying something.
Don't ever count on Russia or China
Russia is not the USSR. The slavs who apparently were hated by Hitler for not being 'white' enough are now trying so hard to be 'white' and join the forces of oppression around the world. I think both Russia and China were promised something far bigger than their losing Libya. Gaddaffi was close with the USSR. His relationship with Russia was ambivalent. The Russians probably hated him for cutting deals with the French and British. China is all about business. They still believe there is a lot to gain from their partnership with the West -- as at now. Libya was expendable in a sense. Even Iran was against Libya. That is how bad it was for Gaddaffi. During a visit to Zimbabwe, a chinese envoy was asked why they did not veto the no-fly zone. The Chinese intelligently told the Africans that the Africans themselves on the Security Council could not vote as a single bloc. The envoy added it was China's policy not to vote against a bloc. I blame the 'stupid' Africans. They have always sold out their interests for their own ephemeral comfort. I think if all Africa had told the Chinese to vote against it, they would have. China has a lot to lose in Africa. But we have these silly negroes obeying their so called 'son of africa', Barack Obama. That stupid Jonathan Goodluck of Nigeria shamelessly endorsed the attack on Libya even while his own people were being butchered. Since Shell runs Nigeria as a serfdom,, did it really matter to Jonathan Libya would become the same? These so called Black Leaders? HMMMMM!
As You Said- Before We Point Fingers at China & Russia...
WE MUST NOTE That- 3 Major African countries endorsed UN Res 1973 IE: Egypt [but the Egyptian Elites think of themselves more as Arab so-called 'Middle-Easterners' {a geo-poly-trickal term coined by the Brits & Yanks in just the last 100 - 150 yrs w the advent of the Suez Canal} than Africans -&- the Arab League {AL} headed by the Saudis & Qataris SOLD Khadaffi OUT- BIG TIME {notable exceptions Syria & Algeria]- Nigeria [as you noted- which also Just Voted w the US, France, etc Again on a UN Resolution against Syria- which the Russians & Chinese did Veto]- & S.Africa [IMO- Jacob Zuma regrets this especially after he's likely been chewed out by Mandela privately - Zuma didn't go for the ole Okey Dope this time on Syria]. So, by having the AL vote against Khadaffi [and as you noted even the Iranians & Hezbollah didn't support Khadaffi nor at-least loudly cry foul on this FUK-US NATO assault on Libya - They act like they're NOT on the US' {s}Hit List TOO] & w those 3 very important African Countries Voting FOR UN Res 1973- this effectively let China & Russia off the hook by abstaining... Hey they're econimic & political animals, NOT champions for Justice for African & 3rd World Peoples! But Then- Why did Brazil also abstain [rather than vote NO] even though over half of Brazilians are of African ancestory - For the same reason they've been complicit in Haiti w MINUNSTAH - they don't want to piss the US, UK, France off too much in their bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council....
I think China and Russia
I think China and Russia abstained because they wanted to play both sides of the fence - appear as if taking the ethical high ground but not giving a definitive thumbs down to the madness so as not to piss off the US. Even in these times, both countries talk shit but still kiss US ass to a certain degree. If this weren't true, why not vote no? Both countries knew full well the NATO invasion would end badly. Don't be surprised to see Russia and China also get in on the pillaging of Libyan resources - another reason for abstaining - it's easier to exploit a puppet regime.
Out of cash Libya to meet IMF
Laughable! What happened to the $200 billion of Libyan money frozen? Libya never had money problems under Gaddaffi. You know what is going on? They have stolen the money as they did with Iraq.
Right On & FUK-US NATO Powers Doing IT by Blaming Gaddafi For IT
BY falsely Claiming that the $200 Billion in Libyan national assets, frozen by the FUK-US NATO Powers, all 'really' [according to their 'unofficial' propaganda mouth-pieces IE: Corp Controlled MSNM Media outlets] belonged to Khadaffi himself 'PERSONALLY' - they're poised to loot the Libyan treasury the same way Wall St Bankster types in US, UK, France, EU [remember the Euro is in Crisis] looted the US Treasury for $TRILLIONS & Iceland's & Greece's for $BILLIONS!...
Why China abstained
From what I've read the Chinese were led to belief that their was only going to be a no fly zone and not a full scale intervention by NATO.
