Trayvon Martin, Troy Davis and the 2012 Election

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

by BAR managing editor Bruce A. Dixon

When Obama likened Trayvon Martin to his imaginary son, and that there ought to be a national debate about something or other, what did that mean? It might mean that he wants the votes of those outraged by the murder, but Obama isn't prepared do do much of anything to deserve them beyond claiming to feel our pain.

Trayvon Martin, TroyDavis and the 2012 Election

by BAR managing editor Bruce A. Dixon

... thousands of hooded protesters ended their march by joining with Occupy Wall Street...”

The world of US politics and media is a twisted place where lofty words often cloak base intentions. It's a world where Trayvon Martin's parents, for instance, feel obliged to trademark phrases containing their son's name to prevent economic exploitation of his case by canny entrepreneurs. But in a presidential election year, rampant political abuse, misuse, hand in hand with media disinformation and trivialization of Trayvon Martin and the meaning of his death are practically inevitable.

Corporate media news did cover the “million hoodie march,” a hastily organized outpouring of popular rage and frustration, not just at the individual murder of Trayvon martin, but at the universal American policy of hyper-policing young black males in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and other cities. What the coverage left out, however, is that at least in New York, those thousands of hooded protesters ended their march by joining with Occupy Wall Street, where for the first time in six months the occupation was mostly African American, a fact that would have served the agendas of neither of the two corporate parties.

On the other hand, in the interest of making some whites feel better about themselves, the hacks at CNN sought out the tiny and deceptively named “New Black Panther Party” which seems to exist purely to be called upon by the likes of Sean Hannity and Anderson Cooper when they need a comic black racist bogeyman. The NBPP dutifully rendered its standard performance, complete with scowling and on-camera chest-thumping about bounties and “citizens arrests.”

African Americans are the Democratic party's base constituency. Black politicians are long accustomed to making good sounding but often empty statements against police brutality, stop and frisk, and similar practices. In keeping with the rising level of public anger, black state legislators in New York showed up for a Monday morning press conference in hoodies, and Democrat-supporting figures in the corporate media like Keith Oberman did at least one segment of his show wearing a gray hoodie.

The problem of course, is that the culture of over-policing African Americans is deeply rooted in thousands federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, prosecutors offices, and courts. Aside from repealing a single odious Florida law, few of the public figures and politicians suddenly concerned have any proposals to offer that might begin to roll back the omnipresent culture of racist policing, like rolling back the ability of law enforcement agencies to keep confiscated assets, or ceasing to funnel federal money to police departments based on the number of low level drug arrests. After all, that governing in the interest of the people stuff is hard. Showing up for work in a hoodie is easy.

The 21st century civil rights establishment, unlike their predecessors a half century ago, are so tightly bound to the fortunes and careers of elected Democrats that they dare not raise any demands which will embarrass their colleagues. So extending the dramatic demonstrations to, say, wearing a black ribbon until the nation's prison population is cut in half, are utterly unthinkable. Despite their demands for Justice Department interventions here and there, the last thing the civil rights establishment wants in a presidential year, when their candidate is courting “moderate” voters, is a deep and honest national discussion about hyper-policing and the prison state.

For our cynical black political class, which we sometimes call the black misleadership class, Troy Davis was last year's fundraising slogan, and this year's get-out-the-vote watchword will be remembering Trayvon Martin. Sound far-fetched? It's not. In the 2000 presidential campaign, the NAACP's national voter action arm commissioned a mailer to millions of black households across the country. It featured whites waving confederate flags and the tag line “If they win, we lose,” and a drawing of a pickup truck dragging a chain, an obvious reference to the 1998 Texas murder of James Byrd by white supremacists. In fairness, the murder did happen when Republican presidential candidate Bush was governor in Texas, and Texas had failed to pass hate crimes legislation.

... Obama isn't Trayvon's father, and he isn't ours either, so his imagined emotional connection is beside the point. He's not a pastor, he's a president. ...”

But the black political class never bothered Al Gore about the fact that his home state of Tennessee, like Florida and other key states, banned from the voting lists for life anybody convicted of a felony, disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of voters in each of those two states alone. They never demanded he use his political capital to stand up for their actual constituents. Did it matter? Of course it did. 2000 Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore lost both Florida and his home state of Tennessee by margins far greater than the number of black voters disqualified by the felony restriction alone. In their defense however, using confederate flags and pickup trucks on campaign mailers is a lot easier than demanding your candidate stand up for you, and easy is what our black political class is about.

As for the president, many Democrats, wise and learned members of our black political class have offered, on other subjects the excuse that the president can't say what he wants to say about this or that, or is saying what he thinks he must to please some unknown powerful interests. But if the president is prevaricating on these other fronts, how do we know he's not telling black people as much as he can of what he thinks we want to hear without actually doing much of anything? Obama isn't Trayvon's father, and he isn't ours either, so his imagined emotional connection is beside the point. He's not a pastor, he's a president. For a president, saying there ought to be a national debate without being willing to lead it is a weasely cop-out.

If the president was seriously concerned with trying to prevent police and vigilante murders, he could have opened his mouth on the November 2006 murder of Sean Bell by NYPD. As a member of the powerful US Senate Judiciary Committee and presidential aspirant, Obama was in an ideal spot to put both light and heat on that and many similar cases. He didn't. If the Obama White House was the least bit interested in leading the way, it could have told the Justice Department to find a legal reason to take an interest in the case of Troy Davis. That's all it would have taken to preserve Troy Davis's life for months or years longer, as investigations, debates and political maneuvers continued. Talk is cheap. Expressions of concern are cheap. Even a federal investigation confined to the specific case of Trayvon Martin is a tiny thing, as there are a million mostly young black men in prison, and hundreds will be killed by sworn police officers, not pretenders like Zimmerman this and every year of the near future.

For Obama and the black political class, interested only in their own careers, Trayvon Martin will be an empty slogan, a symbol. Their own careers are proof enough that rolling back the prison state won't be accomplished at the voting booth.

The few lonely voices hollering about Trayvon being the start of some new movement, while bemoaning the fact that the million hoodie march ended up at Occupy are aspriring members of the black political class afraid they won't get their share of campaign dollars of the hoodie folks go with Occupy instead of the Democrats.  But that's the way it is.  The movement for real change will have to begin somewhere else, and flow to and from some entirely different directions.

It took too long to notice

I guess you would have no problem if Zimmerman was only identified as white so that blacks would maintain the blacks v. white meme rather than find affinity with Palestine who gets blown away in their own neighborhoods.

boycott

the people calling for boycotts are completely clueless in this country. are there no black merchants or black employees? keep voting for bigger government and more oppression and see where it gets you.

if you think bigger government doesn't wind up in more oppression, you aren't studying history.

RAISING THE COSTS OF VIGILANTE "JUSTICE"

Black people need to raise the cost of vigilante "justice" not just for the Zimmermans, but also for the society which creates them, encourages and condones their behavior, and afterwards, tries to duck its collective responsibility for the consequences of their acts. It's funny how even in the so-called Bible Belt, where moral persuasion has failed to convince people to respond appropriately to an atrocity, threats to their wallets seem to have a galvanizing effect. The smug Miami Cuban community talked the same game about the ineffectiveness of sanctions a few years ago after they decided to snub Nelson Mandela and Black people responded to them with a (long overdue) boycott. No other group of people subsidizes those who work against them, by doing business with them. Black people need to stop paying people who abuse us. By the way, if,  as you say "big government" is the sole oppressor  in this country, which arm of "big government" was the oppressor Zimmerman employed by?

Trayvon Martin

Greetings,

I uderstand that certain Black Misleaders are not calling for a boycott of any kind regarding the murder of young Mr. Martin. Clearly a boycott of all venues in Florida is in order. During the times when Black American advocated for it self, withourt regard to political parties; we used boycotts as leverage to press our concerns.

I urge all Black Greek letter fraternies and sororities, Black professional organizations, and individuals to boycott Florida.

There were no defensive wounds on the murderer. The murderer must be arrested, tried convicted and sentenced to daeth or life imprisonment.

Police Racist Deadly Misconduct Goes Beyond Trayvon & the South

IN just one month's span there's also: Rekia Boyd- a Black woman shot to death by a Chicago Cop in an incident where no weapon was found.

Anna Brown incident in St Louis- who went to a hospital complaining that her legs were in serious pain- but she was a Black homeless woman, so the hospital called the cops who arrested her. When she told them she couldn't walk they dragged her into the police station & then left her on a cold cell floor - where she died of blood clots- from her legs that lodged in her heart- shortly there after.

So in a month's time there's Trayvon & these 2 sisters & that's only the ones we know of.

At Common Dreams site many supposed liberal / progressives commentors [of article's on Trayvon's case posted @ CD] apparently didn't like my tone RE: how this whole Trayvon case is being spun in the MSNM media. One person even accused me of playing the so-called 'Race-Card'. So I threw out this challenge: Name the last time they could recall the cops in the USA shooting [or beating] to death an unarmed non-violent white person since Kent State in 1970. - One person [the same one who said I was playing the 'Race-Card'] told of an incident involving an 'upset' white guy w a KNIFE [Duh-UH!]. Another talked about the Ruby ridge incident which involved a shoot-out & prolonged armed stand-off w FBI, & ATF [Duh-UH!] & also an off-duty cop who killed his wife & her boy-friend [Duh-UH!].

I told them that I, off the top of my head, could name 10-12 incidents [& probably more than 2 dozen if I really did some research] of cops involved in the suspect shooting deaths of unarmed Blacks in just the past 10-15yrs.

White folks can talk about a fairy-tale so-called 'Post-Racial' USA & accuse Blacks who say that's a bunch of BS- of playing the 'Race-Card' all they want to. Until most whites get at-least half as upset & outraged about Trayvon's murder & Rekia's killing & Anna's negligent homicide [& Aiyana Jones, Oscar Grant, Sean Bell, Kathryn Johnston, Timothy Stansbury, Ousmane Zongo, & Amadou Diallo, the New Orleans / Katrina Danziger Bridge Murders, & on & on & on...] as so many of them [including so-called 'liberals' ] were/are over the OJ's acquittal, there will NEVER be a so-called post-racial USA!

CommonDreams: HuffPost wannabe

I read your post and also wrote about the White Plains NY's Chamberlain shooting. CommonDreams promptly blocked me. Sadly, in their quest to become a moneymaking replica of the Huffington Post, CommonDream has become a dark, heavy hand of censorship and control, Gestapo-style. Here's my post: "Blacks have always been the target of police brutality and injustice. But lately the attacks have become more frequent, blatant and vile, perhaps a consequence of, or a payback to, a half black man having been elected to the White House. Maybe yes, maybe not. Irony is, the man sitting in the Oval Office is the very first to throw black people under the bus, as he has done to Rev. Wright, Jones, Sherrod, and these are the lucky blacks. Your predicament as a poor black person in America has worsened under Obama, unemployment, crime and imprisonment are at an all time high. And consider yourself lucky. If you're black and live in one of the 'gap' countries Obama wants, you're likely to have a drone explode in your face in the middle of the night or have 15 of your relatives being gunned down by a 'troubled' US soldier. But going back to Mr. Chamberlain. I lived in that shitty town of White Plains years ago. I still talk to folks there, they tell me it's still shitty. The place is a dump. You can't park on the streets overnight to begin with, not without a permit. Police might give you a permit at their whim. Most likely not. Like many towns in Westchester it's run by friendly white supremacists just 30 miles north of New York City, they run city hall, they run the courts, they run the restaurants and they run the police dept. Oh yes, racism is part of their way of life like a beef frank is part of a hotdog. That's what killed Mr. Chamberlain, look no further. This is only news because there's a recording of it. And you know what else? The killers will get away with it even if a high definition video of the actual shooting directed by Spielberg surfaces. They already have, the shooters have probably been 'suspended' and moved out of state. God rest Mr. Chamberlain's soul. His only mistake was to think that he, as a black man, could live in a place called 'White' Plains."

Can You find What's Real 411 about Mr Chaimberlain's Killing?

When I Read & heard the details on Mr Chaimberlain's killing by those cops- It makes me suspect there's an under-current at work- IE: Why would the cops come to a medical request like they were going to a drug /SWAT raid??? Just as it seems that Zimmerman may have stalked Trayvon w the intent of killing him, so it seems as if the cops were determine to Break into Mr Chaimberlain's home for the sole purpose of killing him!!! And Mr Chaimberlain actually said as much before they broke his door down!!! So what's the real deal here? Was Mr Chaimbelain a righteous thorn in the cops &/or some crooked white official'(s') side??? Did he own & refuse to sell some property that some corrupt developers &/or Corp wanted in some scheme??? I'm just speculating here but since you know people in White Plains NY- maybe someone knows why the cops used a medical alert as a 'License to Kill' Mr Chaimberlain.

PS: All though Common Dreams have some posts commenting on Trayvon's murder w which I disagree, If you go to The Grio @ so-called 'Liberal' MSNBC [See comments of article 'Is Kendic McDade another Trayvon Martin @ www.thegrio.com/specials/trayvon-martin/is-kendrec-mcdade-another-trayvo... ] you'll see that some of those comments are damn near blantantly racist!  BUT- TO Be Fair- MSNBC's Larry O'Donell has avoided demonizing Trayvon & has been surprisingly [to me] good at seriously questioning the credibilty of Zimmerman's story & that of his [phony] so-called Black friend who's been vouching that Zimmerman's no cold blooded racist killer, as well as putting obscurred [supressed] details in this case [IE: that Zimmerman's father is an ex-Hi Magistrate of VA Courts].

NYC Cops have murdered more than 12 in last 25 years

“I told them that I, off the top of my head, could name 10-12 incidents [& probably more than 2 dozen if I really did some research] of cops involved in the suspect shooting deaths of unarmed Blacks in just the past 10-15yrs. ...”

If you just limit the tally to New York, and start with Eleanor Bumpers (October 29th, 1984), you should be able to find more than a dozen people murdered by the police who were, purely coincidently, all black.

My 66 year old memory bank comes up with Ms. Bumpers, Michael Stewart  ( a graffiti artist armed with spray paint), Amadou Diallo (armed with a wallet), Patrick Dorismond, Sean Bell, Ramarly Graham, and Kenneth Chamberlain. If you want to include Hispanics, we can add Anthony Diaz–guilty of assault with a football against an NYC police car, Anthony Rosario, and Hilton Vega.  This is a very incomplete list.

There used to be a website that listed all the murder victims of NYC cops since the 1970s, but I can no longer find it.  There were many more than a dozen names on that list.

Anyone who says race is not a factor in these killings as well as the Trayvon Martin incident has his head up his ass.

Good comment.  Good article.

Blacks are NOT Dem's "base" constituency

Bruce Dixon writes ...

African Americans are the Democratic party's base constituency. Black politicians are long accustomed to making good sounding but often empty statements against police brutality, stop and frisk, and similar practices.

This is a cliche that is not supported by the facts.  The base constituency of the Democratic Party are JEWS.  Haim Saban is the largest single contributor to the Democratic party.  All too often the Black "Left" apes the rhetoric of Leftist Zionist Noam Chomsky that diverts attention away from Jewish power and control via the euphemistic "corporations".  The reality is that Saban, an ISRAELI, political "bribes" are much larger than most "corporations" and in amounts that Blacks cannot match nor compete.

In the coverage of the Trayvon Martin killing there is no mention that his assailant is Jewish only that he is "White".  By associating the assailant as a Jew perhaps Blacks would find affinity with the Palestinian cause.  Just as Palestinians are restricted in their own homeland so was Trayvon and it got him killed.

But clearly the BAR writers in the same fashion as the Black politicians they rail against are just as fearful to confront Zionism and Jewry that dominates ALL OF America -- Black and White.

Yes.

THANK YOU Bruce Dixon.

LOL

I’m still laughing at how Drudge, Fox News, Infowars, and the mainstream media convinced the public that “Zimmerman” was a Latin surname.

Zimmerman’s father, Robert Zimmerman, is a retired Orange County magistrate judge. Which explains why Zimmerman got away with his previous run-ins with the law, and why the cops covered it up from Trayvon’s family.

Trayvon Martin was put in a morgue for 3 days as 'John Doe' after mom reported him missing.

Florida government/Police officials are leaking negative Trayvon propaganda to the Orlando Sentinel and local Fux News channel, using unnamed sources (Which Matt Drudge, Joker Jones, & Fux News then disseminates).

The Skin-head governor of Florida, Rick Scott, has appointed a racist special prosecutor “with the intent of toning down the rhetoric and preserving the integrity of this investigation.”

The officer in charge of the Trayvon murder scene was the same officer who failed to arrest a police lieutenant’s son who was videotaped attacking a black homeless man. The police lieutenant’s son was later arrested after local news broke the story.

The cops were witness tampering and ignoring witnesses that don’t go along with their narrative.

They’re paying off thirsty house negroes to be character witnesses for Zimmerman.

There is police and cellphone recordings all over the place clearly showing that Zimmerman was the initial AGGRESSOR!

Florida is thoroughly corrupt, and thoroughly RACIST!

You will see a lot of these FOOLS wearing hoodies, but the “Greek,” Freemasonic, Boule, sellout, HOUSE NEGROES won’t dare run ruffshod over FL state law and prosecute Zimmerman, and risk Obama losing this SWING STATE!

Bill-O Chides Oprah 'Stay in Your Place Double-O' [Oprah & Obama

When Oprah commenting on Trayvon's Killing that- 'After 33 Days I don't understand why there hasn't been an arrest or at-least a [credible] investigation in this case...'  Faux New's / FOX Noise's Bill O'Reily replies 'Oprah is usually responsible - but not this time...' [Translated- Oprah is usually a 'good Negro' who knows her place- so how dare she try & jump 'Black' in this case!]. Just goes to show in so-called post-racial USA that just because you're the first Black billionaire [Oprah] or the first Black POTUS [Obama]- there's always a Bill-O, Hush Limpballs, Newt Grinch-witch, etc, etc, etc - to let you know that you are still Just a NEGRO!-So don't even think about 'Forgetting your place'!!!

I'm not to Surprised Alex Jones Might Side w the 'Law' this Time

I agree w Alex Jone's take on many things -BUT- Remember He sees himself as a TRUE American Patriot & He's a BIG 2nd Amendment Gun-Rights Advocate RE: 'personal sovereignty' [as well as calling for a so-called 'Secure' Southern Border]! And this case has implications RE: these slew of so-called 'Stand Your Ground' [= 'Shoot first & ask question later'] Laws that have swept across the US [Not just in FL]- pushed by the usual suspects IE: the NRA, ALEC, & Walmart [the biggest gun seller in the USA]!

Just like that oil depletion allowance ruse

Thanks for Cynical's background info on Zimmerman's daddy --- explains a lot and then some.

I place as much value in Obama's comments on the brutal murder of Trayvon Martin as I do when he urged congress the other day to pass the legislation against the oil depletion allowance --- something he knew would go down --- and an oil company corporate welfare program which has been in effect for almost 100 years -- since 1913 --- therefore, the dems could certainly have attempted to pass such legislation when they occupied the clear majority!

Every time he's running for the presidency he's against the oil depletion allowance and the offshoring of jobs --- then he suddenly has amnesia once the election is over.

Zimmerman's Pop Ex-VA Hi-Magistrate_Top Cop's & DA Pow-Wowed

From TheGrio.com [@ www.thegrio.com/specials/trayvon-martin/robert-j-zimmerman-trayvon-shoot... ]: 'George Zimmerman's father served as a Supreme Court magistrate in the Virginia court system until five years ago, serving as a court officer who dealt with criminal cases.' - Note Zimmerman's pops lives in a nearby community.

Also from TheGrio.com 'Surveillance video of George Zimmerman walking into the Sanford police department shows none of the injuries Zimmerman's supporters claim he suffered during his "life and death struggle" with Trayvon Martin. There are no [obvious] blood or gashes that are visible on the back of Zimmerman's head. And The tape does not show Zimmerman with a visibly broken or even bloody nose [nor bloody shirt].
The tape could prove damaging to the narrative being put forward by the Sanford police department and Zimmerman supporters, since it shows an uninjured, and seemingly unperturbed, Zimmerman walking into the station with police.

See the tape [@ www.thegrio.com/specials/trayvon-martin/trayvon-martin-case-surveillance... ] - MSNBC's Larrry O'Donell & his guest go on to say that not only did the Sanford Police lead homicide investigator come to the scene that Sunday night of Feb 26th - But also the Police Chief! - And afterwards they both met with the county DA! Apparently it was the Police Chief  & the DA that made the decison to release Zimmerman.

So did the lead investigator, the police chief, & the DA pow-wow w Zimmerman's dad, who's a retired hi-Magistrate in Virginia, & then released Zimmerman after concocting this suspect story [IE: LIE] about Trayvon putting the beat-down on a guy that out-weighed him by 50 - 80 lbs- apparently w only 1 arm- since Trayvon was on the phone w his girl-friend at the time???

In Fact- Listening to the closest impartial witness to the scene of the crime- it damn near sounds like Zimmerman executed Trayvon -&- then the cover began immediately afterwards - Note: } Mary Cutcher, who lived closest to where Zimmerman shot Trayvon to death said- 'I heard a young boy crying & then a gun-shot & then the crying stopped. To me mind if it had been Zimmerman crying - he would have continued crying after the gun-shot. I've tried to tell this to the Police several times but they refuse to take my statement...' [Mary Cutcher, whose back door was steps away from where Trayvon was shot, said she heard a boy crying, then a gunshot, then the crying stopped. - “I heard someone crying – not boo-hoo crying, but scared or terrified or hurt maybe,” said Cutcher. “To me, it was a child.” - Cutcher and her roommate said they rushed outside to see Zimmerman Standing Over Trayvon, with one foot on either side of Trayvon’s body. In one hand, Zimmerman held a .9 mm handgun, his other hand was on Trayvon, who was face down in the grass. ]  Note: http://sandrarose.com/2012/03/911-call-trayvon-martin-cried-for-help-bef...

AND NOTE This Article on the State's Attny's dubious actions & history in this case- entitled: 'Trayvon Martin and Crime in the Suite' [ @ http://therealnews.com/t2/component/content/article/125-more-blog-posts-... ]: } 'As material facts surrounding Trayvon Martin’s murder continue to emerge, it is increasingly clear that this sordid case of crime in the streets is compounded by crime in the suites, especially the one located in the State Attorney’s office for Florida’s 18th Judicial Circuit headed, for decades, by Norman R. Wolfinger, a prosecutor with a very troublesome track record on race relations and selective prosecution.
The latest and most glaring illustration of Wolfinger’s biased modus operandi was his attempt to derail a thorough investigation of Trayvon’s murder by the son of a retired state Supreme Court magistrate.  For reasons yet to be revealed, Wolfinger took it upon himself to drive some 50 miles on the night of the murder to the crime scene in Sanford and personally intervene in this case which, as a result, remained secluded from scrutiny for weeks afterwards.  An intent by one officer to at least charge the killer with manslaughter was quickly squelched and he was released, a miscarriage of justice that outraged the local Black community which was determined not to let this latest murder of a Black youth by a White gunman be swept under the rug.  Some three weeks after Trayvon’s murder, the conspiracy of silence was broken, explosively, and Wolfinger was finally forced to recuse himself.  The abuse of power by Wolfinger to stop justice in Trayvon’s case, unlike in so many previous instances over his long career as State Attorney, ultimately failed.

In a case hauntingly similar to the Trayvon Martin murder, Wolfinger also failed to file any charges against two White security guards who shot and killed a 16-year old Black boy on July 16, 2005. Travares McGill, who had no driver’s license, was in a parking lot of a Sanford apartment complex dropping off a passenger when the security guards approached him without identifying themselves and flashed a bright light into his face causing him to apparently panick and drive away.  The guards, claiming self-defense, opened fire with their 9mm pistols and two bullets struck the youth in the back; one penetrated his heart and killed him.  After two months of no action in this case by Wolfinger, the local NAACP held a protest meeting demanding the guards be brought to justice.  Wolfinger responded by claiming he could not take action or even answer questions about the killing since he had not received a report about it from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.  However, even after receiving that report, Wolfinger still declined to file charges against the guards, one the son of a former police officer and the other a police volunteer who had been accused of using racial slurs in an unrelated case.  Four months after the killing of McGill, the county grand jury handed up indictments of manslaughter and shooting into an occupied vehicle against the guards. Both were found innocent of the charges in a short trial in 2007 before a Circuit Judge, but one guard was fined $377 for failure to possess a security guard license while on duty...' {

"It's a world where Trayvon

"It's a world where Trayvon Martin's parents, for instance, feel obliged to trademark phrases containing their son's name to prevent economic exploitation of his case by canny entrepreneurs."

Preventing economic exploitation by other canny entrepreneurs, or, are Martin's parents seeking to profit from their tragedy?

Regardless, this tragic event is turning into a circus with opportunistic entities lurking at every turn.  The politicians' hoodie protest rings hollow (and looks ridiculous), especially when these same politicians vote yea or remain silent on issues which negatively affect the black masses such as privatization of public education, gutting of social safety net and public sector jobs, bailouts for banksters not distressed homeowners, Romney, er, Obamacare, etc.  As usual, the media (and their poltical/corporate masters) are overjoyed by the Martin story.  It's a safe story that can be hyped, poked, and prodded 24/7 as opposed to reporting on the criminal and unconstitutional acts done daily by our govt and corporations along with their allies around the globe.  On Black Agenda Radio, NJ NAACP president Mr. Harris commented on the relevance of street protests today.  He used as example the Trayvon Martin protest march as the largest photo on NYT front page.  I've no beef with NYT giving this incident front page coverage.  My problem is the NYT and its brethren won't give same saturated coverage to the issues raised weekly by BAR and other indy media.

Well-said Beverly. I wanted

Well-said Beverly. I wanted to puke when Obama took advantage of the publicity over this kid's murder with such slimy efficacy. But as a white person, i didn't feel it was my place to criticize Obama's remarks when black commentators like Charles M. Blow (who i am following on twitter) reflect on how much Obama's words meant to the black community. And although i can only imagine, i do imagine it must be powerful to hear the President say that his son would be like Trayvon, the current symbol of oppression in the black community. Who am I to say that even though it's just rhetoric, the President's rhetoric means nothing to black Americans.

So I very much appreciated coming across this article of Bruce Dixon's, and your comments as well which really summed up the hypocrisy. Very grateful this blog exists.

Parents not at fault

Oh but I definitely do not believe Trayvon's parents are trying to profit in any way - their son is dead & his murderer is free! They are grieving! If anyone deserves the benefit of the doubt here it is these parents. Doubtless they would give everything & anything they have just to have their son back.

Better the parents profit

Better the parents profit then anyone else.

Yes, Mr. Dixon. Update

It is a good analysis.  Word clear.

Update: I wondered how long it would take someone to say "Zimmerman" is Jewish based on the name, which is of German origin.  (I am an atheist Jew.)  I went online to see and only found a statement that George Zimmerman is Catholic.   What's true?  I go back to the book/movie title: Constantine's Sword, nonfiction, by James Carroll for history.

On the number of people killed by NYPD:  The October 22 Coaltion has a good list, with details of both national and NYPD incidents with photos,  names, dates, stories "Killed Since Amadou Diallo" and their long national "Stolen Lives Project".  www.october22.org/

It took too long to notice

Zimmerman is a Jewish surname and it is likely that Zimmerman's father is of Jewish origins.  Zimmerman's mother is Peruvian.
http://thebilzerianreport.com/?p=1171

Since the controversy surrounds race the biggest racial problem in America today is Zionism which means there is an equatable affinity to a young Black man being killed in his homeland to that of a young Palestinian being killed in his homeland.  Therefore there really needs to be more of a affinity and working coalition between Blacks and Palestinians.

We recently saw the destruction by Zionists on Libya as well which is an African nation.  Clearly there is a lot that ties Zimmerman to the racism that engulf American policies in the Middle East and North Africa.
