Obamarama: Is it a Movement? Or is it Marketing? And What Should We Be Doing?
A Black Agenda Radio Commentary by Bruce Dixon
When you visit barackobama.com on the web, the button in the lower left corner says “join the movement”. The Obama campaign frankly claims to be the direct successor to and the current incarnation of the movement for justice and human rights which won Black voting rights and an end to Jim Crow. Unprecedented numbers of young people have been put in motion, the corporate media breathlessly tell us, by “the Obama movement” and Hillary Clinton's staffers have publicly wrung their hands in dismay at the futility of running against, not a rival campaign, but against a “movement.”
While there many similarities between a well-executed twenty-first century US presidential campaign, and a successful multimedia and viral marketing campaign, there are many important differences between both of these and a transformative movement for social change.
All three, to be successful, must tap into widespread, deeply held beliefs in their target audiences, and take full advantage of horizontal, person to person communications inside those audiences to push their message, a process marketers call “viral marketing.” But the content of marketing and political campaign messaging is dictated from the top. Though the masses are passive consumers and sometimes the transmitters of marketing and partisan political messaging, they are seldom or never its originators.
By contrast the goals, the messages, the plans, and the tactics of the mid twentieth century movements for civil and human rights did not come from the top down, they came from the bottom up. They came from union halls, student dormitories and church basements. They came from meetings in the back rooms of restaurants and at kitchen tables across the South and around the country.

The greatest difference between the top-down messaging of marketing and political campaigns and the messages of mass movements for change is in the scope of what they demand, and who they demand it from, and how those demands are backed up.
The goal of marketing campaigns is to get large numbers of people to change or affirm habits of consumption. Political campaigns need to get out their vote and win the election for their candidates. The objectives of marketing and political campaigns are time-limited, respectful of authority and strictly inside the bounds of law and decorum, whether shopping, registering voters, canvassing, calling house meetings, or getting out the vote.
Mass social movements aim to alter relations of power. They are impolite and sometimes operate outside of or in defiance of the law. They make impossible, reckless, irresponsible demands, like respect, human rights and the vote to people who didn't have them - like stopping an unjust war, halting foreclosures and gentrification, like guaranteeing the absolute right to organize a union, to strike and to win a living wage. But the Obama “movement” demands nothing from the candidate except to get elected. There are no yardsticks, no demands placed upon Obama by his constituents, no goals that have come from independently organized meetings or other processes in Black America.
Activists are saying that Obama can and will be held accountable eventually - after he is elected. But how realistic is that?
Unless activists both inside and outside the Obama campaign are organizing their own meetings, raising their own demands, and building their own networks apart from those of the campaign's they won't even have the names, or the phone numbers or the email addresses of the thousands of young and old people eager for change who have come forward to work on the campaign. The day after the election the “Obama movement” will be just like those “movements” that elected Black mayors in cities across the land. Over. And another precious organizing opportunity will have been missed.

Obama: The Paper Panther
Barrack Obama is a Paper Panther, as is Paper Tiger: (The nature of a person or organization that appears powerful but is actually powerless and ineffectual).
Because Senator Barrack Obama and Minster Louis Farrakhan are both from Chicago and the minister would eventually comment in favor of, or in opposition to Obama's campaign I am not surprised that corporate media hypocrites like Tim Russet would play the "Farrakhan Card" and force their boy, Obama, to denounce and then follow-up with a rejection of Minster Farrakhan for "past" statements.
I am also not surprised that Obama started off correctly not playing that game but eventually caved-in and cooperated willingly to play the white corporate media's Farrakhan game.
Obama, as much I oppose him should not have to repudiate another Black man that most White people dislike, especially when Obama surely knows that many Black people view that Black man or woman less negatively.
No one but a Black man would be forced to reject outright another Black man on a public stage.
Obama is Paper Panther.

Thank you, DT. I was astounded that someone as smart as Obama got pulled into that "are you now or have you ever been a friend of Minister Louis" gig. I've never been crazy about Obama, but I really thought he had more substance than that. No Black should be forced by anybody, much less any white commentator, to reject any other Black on a public stage, moreover, a public stage in a country as racist as this one has always been.

You have correctly analyzed this obnoxious contest we are witnessing. It is sad to see so many people especially the black ones, marching off into the sunset without even questioning where they are going or what's going to happen when they get there. And shame on Obama for taking advantage of our people like that.
The day I heard one of Obama's surrogates preach to a crowd of people that he (Obama) had come to repair the whole in their soul, I knew then that this was not something I wanted any part of. This is all so disingenuous.
Obama appears to be trying to fulfill a personal ambition and I really don't think he could care less about the people voting for him. To compare his corporate media driven campaign to the hard work, dedication and commitment of our heroes of the civil rights MOVEMENT, is a blatant insult!
What Obama is doing is being staged and his candidacy has been bought and paid for. Unlike Martin and Malcom before him, he is not a man of the people. In fact, this whole thing is bordering on being a cult of personality, which is something that is usually only done in dictatorial environments.
It pains me to watch so many people being caught up in this media blitz. To follow this guy's lead without questioning what he plans to give back, is unconscionable. If he wins this election, I believe a whole lot of people are going to wake up with an acute case of buyer's remorse.

Its too early to think that the "Minister Farrakhan Card" will not be used again. Also Amerikka will have to destroy Obama so the Af/Amers will continue to have "hope". Your contrasting of marketing and social movements is exactly right. These are the true opposite ends of the spectrum. Sad how we continue to define social movements as somehow outside the democratic process, when the truth is that they have always been its main engine. Hell, it took a huge social movement to open up the possibility of democracy itself! As MLK wrote in Birmingham Jail, power never gets redistributed without a fight.
And also sad how we continue to let big business shills use marketing to trick us into thinking they'll put the things on the table that need to get there.

Why after the election?

I am as troubled by the Obama "movement" as you are I think. But, why do you say that people are thinking about "intervening" in that movement only after Obama is elected? Although that might be true for a lot of self-identified "progressives," it is not true necessarily for people who actually consider themselves to be "organizers" (whether or not the individual has ever been able to pay rent based on those activities).
The way I see it,"progressives" have to "fill in the blanks" in the Obama abstract and idealist message by participating in "the movement." since is a "movement" that a lot of people seem to see as having the possibilities of results (even if they are not clear on what those results should be).
From my standpoint here in Chicago, Obama will probably take Illinois handily. But, Daley, Emanuel,and the rest of the supporters of Obama are not interested in bringing forward the issues that the working class community, in particular, need to carry forward. These issues include Single Payer Health Care, the Right to Organize, Repeal of the PATRIOT Act along with the entire agenda connected to the so-called "war on terrorism," fair a legal international migration for workers, raising the minimum wage to a living wage, as well as repealing the bankruptcy bill and so on.
The Democratic Party and their trade union minions are not serious about pushing these issues partially out of fear, partially out of laziness, and partially because they are trained in top-down organization and not in the grassroots.
John Wilson, a former graduate student at University of Chicago has written a defense, of sorts, of Obama ("Barack Obama: This improbable quest"--Paradigm Publishers) against attacks that lack foundation or substance and have been started by the far Right, the press, and, in the case of the his supposed "Muslim" upbringing, first by a plain screwball and later by the far Right.
I do not see a reasonable choice between Barack Obama and Hillary (unless one or the other or both are really secret revolutionaries)--nor do I see one between Obama and McCain for obvious reasons. Given the political facts as they are, it would seem, our problem is, to take two opposing ideas and attempt to find a working solution that works for our strategic goals but uses Obamamania tactically.
We need to organize *now* to try to pull Obama and his "movement" in the right direction. This will involve radio broadcasts, the use of citizen action television, tabling in high traffic areas, and whatever else we can think of to inform people as to what a "progressive" point of view actually is. That would be one that is pro-Labor, anti-war, pro-Human Rights, and operates from the point of view of human development of individual rights through society. As you point out, this is not going to happen by somehow breaking into the corporate structures that support Obama, but we must do our organizing through this "movement." I don't think that we should fall into too harsh an attack on Obama himself at the risk of feeding into the agenda of the far-Right.
