Freedom Rider: Middle Class Means Working Class
by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley
Economic disparities are more dramatic in the United States than any other developed country, yet most Americans have no idea what economic class they belong to. Class war rages, but the losers don’t realize they are under assault, or by whom. “Workers in the private sector who are themselves vulnerable, applaud the effort to race to the bottom, instead of fighting against it.”
Freedom Rider: Middle Class means Working Class
by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley
“Lack of class consciousness has always been a hindrance to American’s ability to maintain and keep a decent standard of living.”
Americans love to think of themselves as middle class. For decades, polls have shown that 90% of the population will refer to themselves with this meaningless phrase. We know of course that there are millions of poor working people in this country, but if anyone asks how they define themselves, the words poor or working will not appear in their self-identification.
The term middle class should disappear from our lexicon, and the sooner the better. Regardless of educational attainment, income, or assets, anyone who depends on a paycheck to maintain their lifestyle is a worker. A white collar, college educated worker who makes six figures is still a worker. If that high income disappears, that individual is in very deep trouble. The sooner Americans begin thinking of themselves that way, the better off they will be.
Working people are under attack in this country in ways that would have seemed impossible just a few years ago. The American mania for middle class aspiration has helped to make this dire circumstance possible, and will cause workers to feel enmity with other workers when they should feel a sense of common cause.
“As the great recession enters its fourth year, cities and states are drowning in a sea of red ink.”
Republicans and Democrats have declared war on those few workers fortunate enough to be unionized. As the great recession enters its fourth year, cities and states are drowning in a sea of red ink. Governors, mayors and state legislators appear to be of one accord on the remedy. Public employees must either lose their jobs altogether, lose pensions and benefits, or lose their union protections. As a result of seeing themselves as middle class and not as working people, workers in the private sector who are themselves vulnerable, applaud the effort to race to the bottom, instead of fighting against it.
Politicians use their anti-union credentials to get elected. Only uninformed and deluded Americans would be supportive of efforts to decimate the lives of the last group of people who have a small measure of job stability.
Income inequality is growing at a rapid rate, but there are very few elected officials who are willing to propose taxing the richest individuals in the country as a solution to fiscal insolvency. A recent report highlights how distorted this inequality has become. In New York City, only 1% of that city’s population now has 44% of its income. Yet newly inaugurated governor Andrew Cuomo has no plans to help the state’s budget by taxing this group whose wealth grows exponentially.
“There are very few elected officials who are willing to propose taxing the richest individuals in the country as a solution to fiscal insolvency.”
New York City is one of the world capitals of finance capital, so it isn’t surprising that the hedge fund chieftains and other financial services industry leaders make their home there. It is appalling that they are considered untouchable, despite the fact that in 1980, the top 1% of New Yorkers had just 12% of the city’s total income. This galloping transfer of wealth is not an issue in policy discussions because Americans don’t understand that the inequality is a result of their interests being crushed. Instead, the misinformed so-called middle class applaud efforts to put everyone under the heel of class warfare perpetrated by people at the top.
This lack of class consciousness has always been a hindrance to American’s ability to maintain and keep a decent standard of living. Racism is in large part to blame. If white people see that their whiteness is the path to success, and it is, they are not likely to see themselves as people in need of political actions taken on their behalf. Now that whiteness counts for less and less, the old habit still dies hard, and white Americans will put people in office who openly declare themselves as the enemy.
“Americans don’t understand that the inequality is a result of their interests being crushed.”
In truth, the words middle class have taken on the meaning of whiteness, worthiness and acceptability. They are devoid of any political meaning, and confuse an already confused people about where their interests lie. When next you read that the middle class are suffering, or are on the verge of extinction or are being ignored by politicians, replace the words with working class. That act will begin new discussion of how the political system can begin to make decisions which will improve the lives of working people, and not only the rich who are getting richer.

'Middle Class' is a lie to confuse us
I have long said that 'middle class' is a lie which the owning class tell the working class to confuse us about our class interests. The history of labor relations in this nation suggests that far too many of us have taken the bait. Thank you Ms. Kimberly for making it plain.

middle class is working class
Thanks Margaret
This is what I tell people every time I get a chance. Middle class, lower middle class, upper middle class, whatever, are only terms used to obscure class conflict under capitalism. As a result people work against their own self interest, due to a lack of class consciousness. I know I am basically repeating what you already said, but it repairs repeating until it sinks in, if it ever will.
Thanks for this article
Good Deconstruction
The other word that needs deconstruction is "Independent" or "Independent Voter," the so-called Independent Voter is strict code for Republican Lite.
Reminds me of "Reagan Democrats."
The Distorted Mis-Represented Issues of Class & Race;
The issue of class is almost as contentious & forbidden a topic as is the race issue in the US. One hears politicians [IE: Pres Obama] speak as if there is only one class – the ‘middle-class’ – as if no other classes exist. However - There are 2 main categories of classes - each w at least 2 main sub-divisions… they are the Haves [w the ‘power Elites’ & the upper-middle class Technocrats]; and the Have little / Have-nots [w the working ‘stiffs’ / working poor & the ‘permanently’ impoverished under-class]. The de-construction of the US’ manufacturing base & the whole-sale ‘out-sourcing’ of those jobs has all but effectively dismantled the ‘blue-collar’ [& even many ‘white-collar’] based middle-class.
Whenever someone in the public discourse starts elaborating too much on this topic you can hear mainstream [Corp controlled] politicians [IE: John McCain] to CNBC, to [Corp controlled] media pundits [IE: FOX’s Sean Hannity] cry foul – ‘you’re promoting class warfare’; – as if the Corp-Gov collusion [public-private partnership IE: GATT by Reagan-Bush & NAFTA by Clinton & his gang of Wall St friendly Rubenites] to ship the manufacturing base & jobs overseas; while assaulting organized labor isn’t effectively protracted warfare on the working class.
Michael Moore wrote a book titled ‘Stupid White Men’. I haven’t read the book but I suspect one of his main premises was that if so many whites didn’t let their prejudices blind them, they might see that most of them have more in common with most Blacks & Browns than w the [white] power elites. I have little doubt that most of these elites are mainly racists [or at least race-baiters], BUT… the only ones that they truly see & respect as equals are their elite peers. Why else were they so eager to systematically ship working class whites’ jobs overseas wholesale [betrayal], when they saw that they could enrich themselves further - even though they were already FILTHY Rich. A recent study shows that over the past few years, the best paid Corp CEOs are those who threw the most workers out of work. This shows that they have utter contempt for working [so-called middle] class whites, however they continually play the race-card via race-baiting Corp controlled politicians & Corp controlled MSNM media [IE: FOX Noise] to misdirect whites’ anger toward Blacks & Browns who are more exploited / powerless than themselves.
These tactics work because the very soul of America was / is infected w racism [& xenophobia], militarism, & elitism [corporatism] from the very beginning [These issues of racism, militarism, & unchecked materialism {IE: Wall St’s motto ‘Greed is Good’} - were at the heart of MLK’s iconic but oft suppressed speech against the Vietnam War made on April 4th 1967- one year to the day before his assassination].
No wonder those in the main-stream [media] resist a ‘Real’ analysis of the class issue... it might lead to a wholesale revolt against the Haves of the US [& the World for that matter] by the Have-little / Have-nots. And Technocrats should beware of the betrayal of the blue-collar-middle class by the power elites, for which they’ve too often participated in. Should such a revolt occur they will likely be sacrificed as a buffer between the Have-little / Have-nots by & for the power elites. These elites often cloak themselves in the mantle of ‘patriotism’ [IE: FOX Noise's Shtick] - but what kind of patriot is it that systematically attacks the foundations of the middle-class by shipping their jobs overseas for greater profits; avoids paying their fair share of taxes by keeping their ill-gotten gains in off-shore bank accounts; profits from the misery of the people [the best paid CEOs put the most people out of work – the Banksters fought laws giving people the chance to renegotiate their mortgages so they could stay in their homes – after the Wall St Banksters caused the housing bubble in the first place, etc]; force workers to work in unsafe conditions under threat of being fired [BP, Massey Energy, Blackwater, etc]; blackmails the Gov into robbing the national treasury [w the Wall St Bankster ‘Bail-outs’]; avoid serving themselves &/or ‘pulls strings’ to keep their kit & kin from serving in the military - while eagerly sending the poor & working class off to fight & die in their wars for profit based on lies; etc, etc, etc..!!
Great Post
Nixakliel ,
Don't you believe that your analysis is one of the main reasons John Edwards was sidelined as a political candidate for President??? (putting aside his personal issues of which I don't give a damn).
There was a "holy shit" moment amongst the Elites and Oligarchs (on the Left and the Right) when Edwards proclaimed there were two Americas. Shortly after floating this theme, the MSM and the Elites put the kabosh on him, and accused him of class warfare.
Added to this attack on the concept of class in America is the belief in "American Exceptionalism." We see this meme writ large in "Reality T.V.", i.e. the belief that every working class stiff can be "rich, fabulous and famous." As I like to say repeatedly, "Every prick in America believes he or she can be a middle manager" and that belief alone is sufficient to breed conformity and acceptance of the status quo. It's not "our problem" Nixakliel, if only folks would get off their asses and work a little harder, they'd be fine. The Horation Alger myth runs deep in the American Psyche, although I posit it is losing ground every year as the "middle managers" who use to have it "made in the shade," find they are increasingly ass-out, on the outside looking in. Ask the "99ers" if you don't believe me.
This is also a scary thought for the Elites, the belief that shit could get out of control if the "middle/working class" abandons the notion of upward mobility. The fear of a "lost generation," could translate into social disruptions, which is the case of sclerotic regimes in the Middle East.
The Tunisians and the Egyptians have abandoned the notion of upward mobility, we can see the results of the death of that myth, it means every country stands on the precipice of all hell breaking loose. If people don't believe or can't envision a "future" what do they have to lose??? It's "Dead Man Walking" and what people, Westerners in particular, fail to understand, it's better to be dead/dead than "awaking dead," ergo the Suicide Bomber.
Yep.
The overclass knows it has to permit some talk of class, given the screaming realities of the matter. But this "middle class" trick has really worked for its sponsors. It allows the frustration to receive a name, but utterly wrecks any chance of connecting the dots.
