The Peculiar Class Solidarity of Barack Obama and “Skip” Gates

thinking about his friendby BAR executive editor Glen Ford
Sean Bell and Oscar Grant were shot down like dogs, but that was none of Barack Obama's concern. But when a local cop racially profiled Dr. Henry Louis Gates as if he were just another Black man, Obama's world shook. “To be subsumed within the Black mass means class death. No one was safe!”

The Peculiar Class Solidarity of Barack Obama and “Skip” Gates
by BAR executive editor Glen Ford
“If Dr. Gates could be treated like any other middle-aged Black man, the entire Better Class of Blacks was threatened.”
What compelled President Barack Obama, the great practitioner of the art of dodging racial issues, to put precious political capital at risk in defense of Dr. Henry Louis “Skip” Gates, whose run-in with a Cambridge policeman threatened neither the Harvard professor’s life nor freedom? At no time in his candidacy or brief tenure as president had Obama displayed the slightest inclination to voluntarily come to the defense of Black folks in general or to interpose himself between white power and any individual African American. In this sense, he has been studiously “race-neutral” – or some would say, downright hostile to Blacks in the mass.
Surely, Obama is skilled enough to have easily parried a reporter’s question on the Gates affair. U.S. presidents, including this one, routinely deflect questions bearing directly on critical issues of war and peace. Why was the apparent racial profiling of Dr. Gates an occasion for Obama to characterize a local police action, and the police officer himself, as “stupid” – thus bringing down the certain wrath of the white public he has so assiduously courted?
The answer lies in the deep-felt class bond between Obama and Gates. Although Obama graduated from Harvard the same year Gates joined the faculty there (1991), in a profound political/cultural sense they are classmates. The class to which they belong is only loosely linked to material wealth. Rather, it is largely negatively defined – that is, Gates’ and Obama’s shared class status is based on the perception of what they are not. They are not like the rest of Black folks; they are different, a cut above the rest, in their own and in white people’s estimations.
“Gates’ and Obama’s shared class status is based on the perception of what they are not.”
To paraphrase the U.S. Marines recruiting spiel, Gates and Obama belong to that sub-group of African Americans (or uber-group, as they imagine) that believe themselves to be The Few, The Proud, The Better Class of Blacks. This self- and white-appointed class strives to prove they are also The Brave by launching periodic assaults on their nemeses, the lesser classes of Blacks. That’s how members of this peculiar class make themselves known: through ritual distancing from the larger mass of African Americans.
Better Class of Blacks' credentials must be constantly updated, for white re-certification.That's why Barack Obama takes advantage of every opportunity (Father’s Days are ideal) to “bravely” point out the moral failings of the lesser classes of Blacks.
Dr. Gates is equally aggressive. As Paul Street writes in this issue of BAR (“’Skip’ Gates: A Curious Martyr in the Struggle Against Racism”), Gates once declared that Blacks must undergo nothing less than “a moral revolution and a revolution of attitude” or risk a permanent schism between the “huge underclass” and the “relatively small” group of Black people like himself. As a fomenter of this “moral revolution,” Dr. Gates presumably sees himself as a brave revolutionary. Just ask all his rich white patrons.
“Better Class of Black credentials must be constantly updated, for white re-certification.”
In profiling Dr. Gates, the Cambridge police were attempting to erase the line that his class has labored so mightily to draw between themselves and what they consider the moral turpitude of the mass of African Americans. If Dr. Gates could be treated like any other middle-aged Black man, the entire Better Class of Blacks was threatened. To be subsumed within the Black mass means class death. No one was safe!
When New York City police went unpunished for killing unarmed Sean Bell in a barrage of 50 bullets, President Obama tersely stated that Blacks should “respect the verdict that came down.” Obama had nothing at all to say when a Bay Area transit cop was video-taped fatally shooting Oscar Grant in the back as he lay face down and handcuffed. And why should Obama have spoken out, anyway? These were not his people. Oh no, they were the problem people, a problem for everybody, but especially for the Better Class of Blacks, who would now have to work even harder to disassociate themselves from the Bells and Grants of Black America.
But the “Skip” Gates case cried out for solidarity. Obama stood up for his class (at least briefly), the political fallout be damned.

"Since the White House tete-a-tete, Gates has taken a more humorous tone in speaking of his arrest, saying that he and police officer James Crowley “discussed plans to take in a Celtics or Red Sox game or have their families meet up for a meal.  “I offered to get his kids into Harvard if he doesn’t arrest me again,” Gates told a crowd Sunday."

"Haardy, har har, Skip, ha, ha ha."  You so funny.  Just the sort of sublime, revealing, powerful statement I'd expect from today's annointed "Leading Black Intellectual."

Maybe Skip intends to maintain a low profile, do some soul searching, some scholarly reflection, or perhaps he will work behind the scenes with his corporate, establishment-driven minions to show that racial profiling,-- after applying Harvard-quality scholarship and scrutiny, and rigorous statistical analysis,-- really boils down to, "It's all a misunderstanding," and the remedy lies in ghetto/police dept. "pub crawls."  Seems that's what Skip learned from his glorious epiphany.  Or maybe he'll team up with "culturally-challenged" Soledad O'Brien and they can leave the CNN format and do a PBS format, these two esteemed intellectual giants and talents.  Who knows, perhaps a classic is in the making, on the drawing board?  I can see it now, Skip and Soledad, mimicing Jacob Bronowski's "The Ascent of Man."  Or perhaps it will rival Sagan's "Cosmos."   Profound, moving, soaring...engaging.. I can't wait!

"You so funny Skip.  You so funny."

The MSM is Root of the Problem

There are no perspectives or voices from those at the frontlines of community struggles, in the trenches.  Our "leaders" are chosen for us be they Skip Gates or Barack Obama, or P Diddy.  The same names, faces, and voices are regurgitated ad nauseum as "the voice or perspective" of Black America.  Just when did Soledad O-Brien become an expert on Black people?
Did she acquire it from her Australian father or Afro-Cuban mother?  According to wiki she doesn't even speak Spanish fluently.  She is the fifth of six children who all graduated from Harvard University, she is married to the co-head of the investment banking firm Thomas Weisal Partners.  She has 2 children, no doubt Harvard bound.

But of course she, like no other, understands "the voices from the hood."

Matt & Meredith: Meet the Rodriguezs

Pregnant mother tasered at baptism party

Responding to a noise complaint in Prince William County, police sought to quell the assembled crowd — who they said were making too much of a racket — by firing a Taser at the child’s grandfather and at the pregnant mother of the baptized child.
The officers said they placed a call to the homeowner, who they said was intoxicated and refused to reduce the volume.
The homeowner, 55, is a church family counselor and bible study teacher. His son, Edgar Rodriguez, claims he was Tasered three times after producing his ID for police. The elder Rodriguez was arrested for public intoxication in his own backyard.
The two say police used excessive force to quiet down “a backyard party.” A home video of the scene shows a relatively tame event.
The pregnant mother of the baptized child was also Tasered in the back after officers averred she was assaulting a police officer, and is now being held separate from her family by Customs and Immigration Enforcement.
This video is from Fox 55, broadcast August 1, 2009.

Denial

While some folks were wrapping themselves in their blanket of denial over the Gate's incident last week, one of Sergeant Crowley's colleagues in Boston (Officer Justin Barrett) referred to professor Gates as a "Monkey Eating Gorilla" in an e-mail.   He now faces termination from the Boston Police Dept.

Of course Officer Barrett felt he had to appear on the Larry King show to announce to the world that he's not a racist.  Amazing!

I can't agree with you more,

I can't agree with you more, I think even Larry King talked about this.
Business

Evidence?

Glen, why did you assert, as if it were an undisputed fact, that Gates was racially profiled? What's the evidence? Doesn't evidence matter?

give me a break.

What else explains arresting Gates?  He was entering his own house.  Why else would he be arrested?

You're a bit slow on the uptake, citizenjeff.

no break for micah

It's entirely possible that Gates was arrested only for mouthing off. Not all bullies are racists. Aren't you aware that whites are also victimized - albeit far less often than blacks - by contempt of cop arrests?

oops, a failure for citizenjeff

What "mouthing off" is arresting grounds?  There's NO crime in "mouthing off" to a cop.  None.  Apparently you misunderstand the First Amendment.

I am no fan of HL Gates.  I don't like his appeasement.  But to be arrested for entering his own house, what other motivation is there besides a cop assuming that a Black man can't possibly live in Gates's house?

Arresting officer can call in to see who lives at Gates's address.  So he gets the response "Henry Louis Gates."  Cop then assumes that HL Gates is NOT HL Gates.  Why would he assume that, other than skin color?

Nice try, citizenjeff.  Very nice try.  But... FAILURE.

No failure for citizenjeff

Gates broke no law, but we're discussing what motivated the arrest, which is a different issue. Try to stay focused, genius.

ha ha ha ha, what a laugher.

I think you mean YOU instead of we, "genius."

Let's go back to your point -- you said there's no evidence for Glen Ford to accuse the arresting officer of racial profiling.  I explained precisely how racial profiling is suggested by the facts here.  And instead of you rebutting my offer, you call me names.

I don't have to wonder why you are reduced to snarky childish namecalling.  It's obvious.

micah v. reality

Actually, genius, I didn't say there's no evidence.

Actually, you did.

And we only have to go read your snark at Glen Ford to see it.

If you want to make a point about Contempt of Cop, you should make that point directly, without your childish snark that serves only your insecure ego.  But instead, you have some childish need to belittle Glen Ford, me, and everyone else here.

It's pretty obvious why that is.  You're not as smart as you think yourself.

micah's comprehension problem

Glen failed to cite evidence, so I asked him what he has in mind. I've reached no conclusion, dumbo.

lying, lying, lying

You say you "reach no conclusion" while by your deeds you tell another story.  You issue insults toward me and Glen Ford on the subject of racial bias in the arrest, and you clamor endlessly for everyone to conclude that this was about "contempt of cop."

You're a horrible liar, Jeffro.  Your friends must love you on poker night, you're like the bank with open-teller policies.

Bullying bullshit!

Racists are, above everything else, bullies too! You want to reduce this to bullying in the playground? Are you serious? We die at the hands of these bullies. When has a white person ever been killed by a white or black cop for being white? This is not about white victimisation. This is about a black man who was arrested in his own home for no reason at all! Now, one of your "bullies" calls us "banana eating jungle monkeys". I would imagine that's what white folks are called in your world, right? No amount of spin will change the minds of black people who know racism when they see it! Go say that shit to Obama and Gates and copy the KKK...

Let's be honest

Gates wasn’t killed; he was subjected to a contempt of cop arrest. Although it happens much less often than it happens to blacks, whites are also victimized by such illegal arrests.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer analyzed contempt of cop arrests in Seattle over a 6-year period (2002-2007). These are cases in which the defendant was arrested for nothing other than obstructing an officer, and the case was dismissed or never prosecuted.

  • Total number of obstruction arrests: 1090
  • Total number of cases dismissed or not prosecuted: 508
  • Total number of blacks not charged or case dismissed: 238
  • Total number of whites not charged or case dismissed: 205

According to the report < http://www.seattlepi.com/local/353020_obstructmain28.asp >: “African-Americans are arrested for the sole crime of obstructing eight times as often as whites when population is taken into account...”

Do you agree that if the situation in Cambridge is roughly analogous to the situation in Seattle, one shouldn’t assume the professor was arrested because he’s black? Or do you think that if blacks in Cambridge are eight times more likely than whites to be subjected to a contempt of cop arrest, the statistical difference is enough to lead a fair-minded person to conclude that Crowley mistreated Gates because the professor is black?

State of War -- MEN OF INTELLIGENCE vs. MEN WHO LABOR

In the Vietnam War we "pure white" laboring men, if we wanted not an Article XV, never for a moment considered calling our middleclass black officers “son.”  And as those of intelligence who led us into battle did on occasion refer to us as “son,” out of mutual respect we choose not to patronize each other in such a demeaning way.

In regards to our self-absorbed majority creating an intelligence dictatorship, a rich nobility dictatorship that allows everyone to enrich themselves upon the misery of those slower of thought, enough said.

The Eugenics Movement was conceived by the super-intelligent rich for the following reason: Ability to kill and compete in a global economy is in direct proportion to intelligence, and keeping us dumb laboring men unemployed, in jail and divorced, which allows men of intelligence to have free access to our girls, this does in fact elevate intelligence, increase ability to conduct wars and improve our economy.

Eugenics Movement creates a smoke screen, something that blinds the mind by burning the emotions, by useing all of corporate owned media to create an illusion that the type of genocide called eugenics is all about race.  Problem is, over 20% of children in America are under nourished and suffering premature death, and they are about equally divided between pure white, brown and pure black.

Having grown up in the slums of Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and LA, and having lived in neighborhoods that were mostly all white, experience tells me that poverty has nothing to do with race, it being all to do with the brains were born with.

For ambition is a three step process: First comes the intelligence to learn a task, then comes visible signs of progress, and then comes ambition. Like when I tried in high school to learn geometry, tried again in the Army, then tried again in vocational school and finally gave up. Surely no visible signs of progress = no ambition.

My “pure white” European ancestors came to America on a sail boat as bond slaves, and finally died as impoverished bond slaves. And down to great grandfather Tollefson who carried ice on his back, to grandfather Ellis who died uncoupling a rail road car, and to father Ellis who carried hides on his back, all considered dumb, all slow of thought and very proud I am of it.

Comes now a stuck-up middle-speed brain owned by “Enlightened Cynic,” and he to parade his superior intelligence by sarcasm that attempts to degrade those he considers inferior. But fool that he be, surely his intelligent stupidity is now on display for all the world to see.

Alabama John, cut the "cute" and "folksy" bullshit

"Having grown up in the slums of Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and LA, and having lived in neighborhoods that were mostly all white, experience tells me that poverty has nothing to do with race, it being all to do with the brains were born with."

That's a crock of shit and the more I reflected on your words the more cynical I became, "son."  For having "grown up" in the slums you don't know squat about Black "slang."  My sarcasm was directed at the Harvard "genuises" you apparently think are entitled to rule the world because "we" of "inferior intellect" are bound to our status by birthright.  (you should have been born in the Middle Ages, Alabama John)   And no amount of hard, work, perseverance, or pure luck will change that.  Or equally important, us "dumber sorts" should not try to educate, debate, or agitate for public policy changes.  All of the things that have signified social movements for centuries are for naught, the conflict, the agitation, because "Lord Have Mercy" we are just to dumb to change our circumstances.

"Poverty has nothing to do with race."  "Poppycock," Alabama John.  Race has been, is and will continue to be a factor in poverty though certainly class standing and intellect play a role.  Go tell all of the MBAs, PhDs, and college grads standing in the unemployment line that their "superior intellect" will save them, that there is light at the end of the tunnel, that their superior bearing will change their plight with a click of the heels.  Go tell the Black and Hispanic college educated, middle managers that were steered into high risk loans, race doesn't matter. That the looming foreclosure is connected to their "middle of the road" "intellect."

My parents were Miss sharecroppers, who worked their asses off.  (Who continue to enjoy a little chewing tobacco and snuff)  My mother chopped cotton during 7 pregancies. They were basically indentured servants, prisoners of debt peonage as were millions of other Blacks (and some Whites) throughout the "Black Belt."   Their poverty had not a damn thing to do with intelligence. Their "intelligence" in fact allowed them to survive and progress.  Their poverty resulted from the venality and greed of the plantation owner and the oppressiveness and rot of Miss. institutional racism.  Their "poverty" changed when they left the sweltering racism of Miss. like so many other Blacks who "migrated North."  My father still barely reads and writes but he worked his ass off to provide for his family and give us opportunities.  He sent 3 of 7 kids to college, one went on to graduate with Masters and Law Degrees, all are responsible, productive citizens thank God.  Now that Horatio Algier's shit ain't clockin for everyone despite what you see on Reality TV or in Sumdog Millionaire.  And not everyone can "pull themselves up by their bootstraps."   And much of this talk about "personal responsbility" is bullshit, nothing but warmed over eugenics. The "superior intellects" (as you like to call them) are creating the ideological framework for "sink or swim" the ideological framework for eugenics which alarms me.

You appear to be a "silent partner" in the eguenics movement with your ridiculous assertion that poverty is a result of human intelligence or lack thereof.  And there's nothing "superior" in being a soul-less, flesh-eating zombie with a tie, pant suit and a Ivy League degree who worships the material world and self indulgences more than life itself.  These "superior people" are nothing but devils with a Ivy League Degree and social standing.  In fact, I consider them "inferior" as basic human beings.

Note to Citzenjeff:  While I agree (and have so cited articles) that Whites are subject to the same risk of being arrested for "pissing an officer" off as are Blacks, your statistics demonstrate a disparity that can't be explained as anything other than disparate racial impact, i.e. racism.  Seattle is roughly 75% White and 9% Black.  Second, there is no Black/White comparison in the incidents where innocent Blacks have been shot dead (often "intelligent" "middle class" Blacks Alabama John, not "thugs).  Let alone arrested on trumped up "interference" and "disorderly conduct" charges.  I guarantee you if a white boy had been shot dead in the subways of Boston like that youngman in S.F.,  GMA, the Today Show, CNN and MSNBC would have blasted that shit over the airwaves for months if not years.  Think back to the press coverage (and sympathy) for Randy Weaver and Ruby Ridge.  And this M****F****r was having a gangster shootout with the feds!  Compare that to what happened to Move in Philly.  Even f****king David Koresh gets more love than the children burned to death by another uncle tom Wilson Goode.

White folks always get upset about guns, unless they doing the shooting. Case closed.

Black, stuck-up and of the fast thinking middleclass

Bless their darling hearts, now just because I am white, stuck-down and of the slow thinking laboring class, they wouldn't discriminate against me, would they?

Ignore me, use five syllable words that cannot be understood by, now they wouldn’t be so high minded as to prejudice exclude me in such an intelligent way, would they?

Its like this “white” middleclass widow who answered my dating ad.  Who then responded to my thought that the Salvation Army was correct, that the permanent homeless had not the intelligence to earn a living wage, by saying,

“O no, their just as smart as us, its just learned helplessness...
we should not be prejudice against the homeless...
we must be careful not to humiliate or shame them in that way...
My church gives free food to the homeless and it is so beautiful.”

And so, gentlemen, why is it shameful to be a less intelligent gentlemen?

But quite to the contrary, for we slow and careful thinkers are dumb and proud of it. Nothing embarrassing about it and nothing to be shamed in the being of it.

For brains like sex-appeal and wealth pass from father to son, and our fate in life is set at birth. For brains produce ability, ability produces visible signs of progress, and the result is ambition which produces income

For stupid are those of intelligence who think that being dumb is shameful, that those who act dumb are of a lower class and not deserving of upper class income, healthcare or quality of life.

For stupid is not a measure of physical intelligence, but the degree to which pride and conceit has a man blinded in darkness and out of sync with reality.

For stupid and the most brainwashed class of beings that ever walked the earth are those of the stuck-up middleclass in Empire USA. For we of the 60% laboring class endure the misery, the 10% super intelligent create the misery, and oblivious to it all the 30% middleclass supervise, manage and administer the misery.

Comes now the only logical purpose for allowing such misery, to prove the harm in it. Surely this be true, and we are all given a different ability to earn income as a test, to see if we pass our excessive wealth down to the next one less intelligent where it belongs.

Alabama _John, "your're starting to grow on me son"

Now "son" is used here as affectionate" slang, a compliment.  It's not a put-down term referring to your alleged "inferior intelligence."
You said:

"For stupid and the most brainwashed class of beings that ever walked the earth are those of the stuck-up middleclass in Empire USA. For we of the 60% laboring class endure the misery, the 10% super intelligent create the misery, and oblivious to it all the 30% middleclass supervise, manage and administer the misery. HAA, I love it!  Alabama John, never will we get so much wisdom in one sentence from a Harvard University student's essay or professor's textbook or the Gallup Poll.

The scary thing that you highlight with the link is (and others have discussed elsewhere at BAR) is that the Eugenics Movement is alive and well.  Pretty soon it's gonna be sink or swim.  If you can't succeed Alabama John, it'll be because Mommy and Daddy chewed tobacco or spit snuff (like my parents), or chopped cotton, or you're from the Bronx, W. Va, or Robert Taylor Homes.

How soon we forget (Not Alabama John) that the Eugenics Movement did a number on poor working class whites who were not "pure Anglo-Saxon."  It won't be just Blacks and Hispanics catching hell.

http://www.accd.edu/sac/honors/main/papers02/Judge.htm

http://hnn.us/articles/1551.html

And this "social determinism" will come from the so-called academically brilliant and best thinkers in America as the article above states:

"... that proponents of eugenics were not obscure cranks or fringe right-wingers, but the best and brightest civic reformers and professional leaders. In southern California, the Human Betterment Foundation enjoyed the active support of banker Henry Robinson, as well as social scientist William Munro and Nobel Prize-winning physicist Robert Millikan, all of whom also served on the board of trustees of San Marino's Huntington Library, one of the country's most exclusive archives."

One last thought, this ever-increasing hew and cry for "personality responsibility" will be skewered and manipulated to increase social determinism, and, worst-case, a clear introduction of eugenics. It's your fault, Alabama John, that you grew up bare-footed, in a 1 room school house, and slopped pigs after school instead of taking an expensive SAT course, please, please, get your shit together, because the government is running out of $$.   LOL

I'm Curious

...to know whether or not Obama and Gates are going to connect the dots from their situation to 287g, the program which expands the rights of law enforcement and has been proven to increase the rate of racial profiling. Would it be presumptuous of me to guess that they will not?

I'm convinced

It being self-evident that Obama and Gates do not grasp, or pretend not to grasp, the reality that racial profiling laws enhance a police state mentality, is it not equally self-evident that this historic meeting will do more harm then good?

Strike first blow -- All bloodguilt is yours

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects,
against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated."
Forth Amendment, US Constitution

First blow came when cop ordered Gates to come out of the safety of his home, destroying his Forth Amendment right. Second blow came when cop ordered Gates to be silent, destroying his First Amendment right to freedom of speech.

The only possible legal complaint the officer had against Gates was a failure to treat an officer of the law with proper respect. But the officer lost all right to be treated with respect by ordering Gates to obey an illegal command and doing it in such a disrespectful way that it greatly upset a very gifted, cool and highly intelligent Professor Gates.

And surely the officer is telling fiction when he alleges that public speaker Gates used loud, blunt and belligerent language against him. For what Gates most likely did, with a small crowd gathered to watch, was cut the officer to the quick with articulate and skilful words impossible to refute and most embarrassing to endure.

And so, if the arresting officer teaches a course on racial profiling to new cadets, then pity all the victims harmed of his perverse idea of what the Constitution is all about.

Who deserved more respect -- The real issue

Professor Gates got angry, and because of this Officer Crowley got so angry that he committed a crime by arresting an innocent man without the slightest probable cause.

Professor Gates all his academic life treated with respect by whites, Officer Crowley all his years on the force instilling the fear of death into any black who looked at him cross, and these mighty "two ships passing in the night" had a mighty wreck nationwide.

With hindsight surely a matter of respect, and specifically who deserved more respect.

But Gates will say that if cops keep getting away with this, then a police state and slavery will it be for blacks. Whereas Crowley will say that if a black can use race as an excuse to act like this, then blacks will have no respect for the law, or for cops who must enforce the law.

Comes now a realization that they both are correct, both correct in their positions and correct in the actions used to defend their positions. For according to human standards they both did in fact deserve more respect.

Problem is, the purpose of this life is to prove that we all have been blessed with far more then we deserve, and out of a grateful heart should be willing to give all we can give.

Worshiping “other gods”

Strap a killing machine to a man’s body, and surely you end up with a god-ego that can only be appeased by adoration and worship.

Now if everyone was honest we would not need law enforcement, just pass honest laws and elect honest politicians to administer decency and order.  But there is very little honor among men, least of all honorable politicians, so we need force and the lubricant that gets things done is government deadly force.

Watching how brutal the riot police in England are, beating to death on video an old man because he failed to get out of the way, I must say their almost as bad as riot police in Minneapolis or Chicago during a national convention.  But there is a world of difference between our law enforcement and theirs in the relationship carried on between the law and people.

For in grand old England no cop carries a gun, and would you believe cops are actually friendly toward the people.  And the all-encompassing reason is that in England law-abiding people are never exposed to the deadly force of government.

Its like last spring at a grocery store when a little girl in front of me was shaking and lightly sobbing.  So I looked up at her mother who then said, “She sees the policemen, I don’t know why she’s so afraid of him?”  So I said to her, “Its not the cop, its the killing machine strapped to his body.”  So why all this excessive show of force, all this state sponsored terror that accomplishes nothing but make little girls cry.

And so, friendship with a stranger having a gun strapped to his body, especially a stranger who can legally kill you if he feels there is probable cause, surely this is an impossibility.  For there are old friends who we know from experience intend us no harm, and there are strangers with a smile who come to us with no ability to do the slightest harm.  For life is short, we all live a doomed existence and nothing gives us more stress then the thought of being in harms way.

For a new law I pray, if a cop needs a gun make him carry it in his hand, that's what I always say.

TOO BAD

I feel no empathy or concern over this Gates person. SO WHAT! If he is so important, if he is in such a high position, why does he not do anything to alleviate the poor circumstances of other people in this country? Instead, it seems that all he wants is self-aggrandizement and acclaim.(just like the payaso Obozo) So I say again, SO WHAT?
When he raises his prejudiced boca to raise issues of real people, injustice, etc. and stops acting like he is so special because he works at an over-priced ivy league institution-who by the way has so much money they could pay for all of the students to go there for free-then maybe I will care if he was arrested. SO WHAT! Another thing, the fact that he is a representative for the fake Obozo makes me even more disinterested in what happened to him.
Finally, if he is so smart and educated, why does he have such a vulgar way of expressing himself? You would think he would be able to do better than he did in expressing his outrage.
And yes Glen Ford, thanks to BAR, i recall the insufferable remark the Obozo made about Sean Bell and as far as I know he said naught about Oscar Grant. Yet he can open his foolish boca about one of his own not special friends.
These people sicken me no end.
I say again, SO WHAT H.L. Gates? I am sure with all his connections to Anglos he can ameliorate any pain or discomfort he felt upon his plight by looking at historical records of them and find they had some sort of equal treatment such as his. surely that will make it okay.
And by the way- I don't like the whoe cerveza/beer thing. The substance abuse rate of Americans is pretty ponderous, yet they are glorifying alcohol. Why couldn't they have had lemonade or something. Better yet, why are they doing this at all when people are losing jobs every minute of everyday and Oboza is holding fake photo ops?
Thanks to you Mr. Glen Ford

glorifying alcohol

I agree with you on this. Why not meet over green tea?
Alcohol fuels so much domestic violence, death by auto.
It is an addiction. Give it a pass Obama

It all depends on stress, and if the sight of a legalized killer

Now if your of college level intelligence, then you feel comfort at the sight of killing machines strapped to the bodies of men licensed to kill. For you need protection from men impoverished who are not to happy about your having excessive wealth.

Whereas if your a laboring man then you know that legalized killers are hired to kill you.

Comes now Professor Gates to be treated like a “lower class” laboring man, and all of the stuck-up intelligent middleclass to be absolutely incensed and outraged.

For Barack Obama a teachable

For Barack Obama a teachable moment is personalizing and trivializing the situation, using it to show how "charming" he is. A beer with both protaganists. Isn't that ever so civilized.
At a news conference Gibbs and whomever even had a laugh about what kind of beer would Obama drink.
But I'm thinking that for millions of people whose lives are forever destroyed by the criminally unjust sytem, the families and communities that are destroyed, for every individual whose loved one rots in jail, for all of these, I'm thinking it's no laughing matter.

Don't disrespect me, or you're guilty of "tumultous behavior"

Boy that MSM is a M****F**r, isn't it?  WTF does Whalen (911 caller) have to do with it.  Check out the MSM and how they twist shit:

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jqwi0TSVtxC458-6AKpUua...

"Cambridge police Commissioner Robert Haas acknowledged that the police report contains a reference to race, but said the report is merely a summary of events. The arresting officer, Sgt. James Crowley, has said his information on the race of the suspects came during a brief encounter with Whalen outside Gates' house; she contradicted that Wednesday, saying she made no such description."

If Whalen contradicts Crowley's report, then WTF?

AP:  "Whalen says she was vilified on blogs as a racist after a police report said she described the possible burglars as "two black males with backpacks." Her lawyer has said mainstream media outlets and bloggers had concluded she was a privileged white neighbor."

So the MSM, which "investigated" this shit with the acuity of a 3rd grader grates on Gates and Obama and Black folks, but dismissed the inconsistencies in Whalens 911 call and Crowley's report.  But they are deigned to use this shit to give us Black folks a "teachable moment."  So Whalen said NOTHING about race, then how did Crowley assume the 2 with back packs were Negroes, er Blacks, er African Americans?  Chew on that one "Law and Order" fans.  How you like them apples?  And don't anyone come here challenging my assertion and interpretation of the facts.  For if you do so you risk being citizen arrested by me for "tumultous behavior."  ROFLAO.

"Tumultous behavior."  That's some 1960s and 70s shit. Obama, the Constitutional scholar should have used that shit as a "teaching moment."  But he would'nt dare talk about how Thurgood attacked Southern (and Northern) statues that in effect criminalized constitutional rights of free speech or assembly?   Go look up how many times MLK was arrested for "disorderly conduct" "disturbing the peace", "interference with offical acts" or "loud and opprobious conduct."  That shits an eye opener Law and Order fans.  Former Editor of the Harvard Law Review should have reminded the MSM that "tumultous behavior" sounds like some unconstitutional shit, you know, that "void for vaugness" doctrine he's been teaching at law school?  Or that principle that says it's unconstitutional to put unfettered discretion in public officials or unconstititional to have laws dictatating standards of conduct or behavior you are legally obligated to adhere to BUT FOR WHICH NO STANDARDS EXIST BY WHICH TO MEASURE SAME.  The standards are apparently in Crowley's head, along with the "racial profiling" Whalen and the MSM saids she's not responsible for. I guess the standard boils down to "Nigga (or Whitey) shut your damn mouth, don't bother to give me facts that might exculpate you or save me time and energy, do as I say or I'm arresting your ass."

The MSM also didn't say shit about why so many cops were needed to calm down this little bitty black man on a cane when  even my daughter looks like she could whip Skip's ass, unless he started swinging that cane, then she'd probably crack his slow moving ass over the head with a chair or hit him with a vase and run (great Law and Order script??).  Apparently the cat with him wasn't saying shit and clearly no threat?  For if he said squat you can be sure his ass would have been arrested too. Now that's racial profiling my friends.  Everyone knows it takes a swat team to keep yall niggas in check.  ROFLAO

Speaking of "profiling" as Don King would say, "Only in America" do you have to put up with horse shit perpretrating as journalism.  Thanks BAR for helping me keep my sanity.

What of "Post-Racial America" Now? Dr. Gates

Mr. Ford you are dead on.  In fact, all one needs to do is listen to Dr. Gates comments after the incident in which he proclaimed (somewhat ironically if not cynically) that he would in essence devote his forthcoming scholarship to racial profiling and the plight of ordinary Black Americans.  Oh really, "Skip, I thought Directors of African American Studies Programs do that anyway?"  Sorry, my bad.  Didn't know you needed an epiphany of sorts.

Looks like poor Skip got too caught up in the euphoria of "post-racial America,"  a convenient meme for his new forays into DNA research.  Memo to Skip:  DNA has long proved our commonalities and sameness, but the Racists and Supremacists have never let science get in the way of a good, self-serving theory.  I mean, after all, as Juan Cole writes, the Taliban and Afghans have been evil savages for a long, long time.

http://www.tomdispatch.com/post/175100/juan_cole_empire_s_paranoia_about...
"What most observers don't realize is that the doomsday rhetoric about this region at the top of the world is hardly new. It's at least 100 years old. During their campaigns in the northwest in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, British officers, journalists and editorialists sounded much like American strategists, analysts, and pundits of the present moment. They construed the Pashtun tribesmen who inhabited Waziristan as the new Normans, a dire menace to London that threatened to overturn the British Empire."

So now we are suppose to analyze "race relations" and use the Gates incident as "teachable moment" as if teachable moments were possible in a political and media system as vapid and corrupt as the United States.  The corrupt MSM (liberal and conservative alike) wants to focus on the "caller"s mindset.  (Overlooking the fact that her "description" is proof positive of why so many people are falsely I.D.'d)  They won't discuss the recordings that show Gates showed his ID while in his home. The fact of the matter is the cop arrested Gates because he was an uppidity nigga, the other truth of the matter is that the cops have no problem equally arresting "uppidty whites and Hispanics."  But you can certainly get away easier arresting uppidity niggas, that's a component of the racial profiling context.  Bet you if the same thing happened to Alan Dershowitz you wouldn't have Rush and the Police Unions asking for apologies.

A "teachable moment" would emphasize inadequate and poorly trained police, a teachable moment would have discussed the inherent and scientifically documented dangers of convictions based on faulty ID's, a teachable moment would entail discussing the rise of the police state and officers's (and prosecutors) unfettered discretion.  As Kelly Vlahos writes correctly, "Today, Henry Gates Tommorow You."  Check out the videos in her article and you'll seen that race is only one aspect of the problem.  The bigger problem is the ascending police state that "censors" all political protest or personal protestations by bogus charges like "disorderly conduct" or "interference with official acts."  Back in the days when I was a prosecutor the cops or sheriff's deputies would charge your ass with "all of the above" oblivous to principles like double jeopardy or lesser included offenses.  Think about all the innocent whites and others arrested at political functions.  Or the college student who was arrested because he challenged John Kerry.  As long as our rotten and besotted MSM is carrying water for "teachable moments" you can be assured we'll all remain as dumb as doornails.  Check out the Okla. Hwy Patrol video to see the heights of the arrogance of some of (not all) of the folks called upon to "protect and serve."  Some of these peole are not fit to have authority or carry a gun, that includes Whites, Blacks, Hispanics and Asians.

p.s.  Why they trying to give Plaxico 2 years in jail for shooting HIMSELF?

Plaxico

Plaxico is not being charged with shooting himself but for unlawful carrying of a handgun. That charge comes with a minimum of 3.5 years. He broke the law so he deserves the punishment. I would rather them make him keep playing football and just pay most of his salary for the next 3.5 years to the government or a charity. Jail time would be such a waste of talent.

Racial Profiling Par Excellence: NY Rockefeller & Gun Laws??

I understand what he's charged with, my point is who did he harm?  And even you agree jail is a waste (of his talent versus he "deserves the punishment."  No otherwise lawful abiding citizen carrying an unliscensed concealed weapon deserves 2 years in prison for shooting himself.  That's straight B.S.  Cheney wasn't even held to task by the Media when he shoot dude in the face?  How many unliscensesd weapons do you have in your crib?  Never mind, you can take the 5th.

This is just some ridiculous "liberal" bullshit, that harsh weapon laws can impede the flow or usage of weapons.  New Yorkers are just "jerking themselves off" thinking gun laws or giving Plax time is going to make them safe.

I assure you if I by chance venture into certain parts of ATL, the Bronx, Algiers, or Southside Chicago, I'll take my chances going to prison for carrying an unliscensed weapon.  People need to do their research on the historical context of gun control.  These laws were aimed at Blacks from their inception, to disarm them so they couldn't engage in insurrection or self defense.

While NYrs delude themselves in executing their racially targeted drug and gun laws  White boys buying that shit before it hits the shelf.  You can't get your hands on the shit cuzz.

These same NY "Liberals" have no problem arming our "allies" to the teeth, even "bunker busting nukes."  Perhaps, like California, you'll just go the f***k broke trying to lock up everyone in sight, or end up just like them releasing them back into society with no skills. An editorial in the NY Daily about "giving Plax the max" but the vampires on Wall Street get bonuses after wrecking the world economy.  Gotta hand it to you.  Where's Spitzer when we need him.  Next time you New Yorkers, especially you fake liberals, whine about gun laws and controls, hum a few bars of this as you munch on your bagel:

In my mind I'm goin' to Carolina
Can't you see the sunshine
Can't you just feel the moonshine
Ain't it just like a friend of mine
It hit me from behind
Yes I'm goin' to Carolina in my mind"-- James Taylor

"Gun Control" my ass.  I'm going to Carolina..

p.s. And yes folks "teachable moments" include the shit hole criminal justice system in total.  Not WTF Whalen "thought" when she made a 911 call.

The Death of Black America
