Liar, Liar!! Barack Obama's Secretary of War

by BAR managing editor Bruce Dixon
Some Obama supporters are wringing their hands over the selection of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.  Hillary was, after all, a consistent supporter of the disastrous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and much more.  But Barack Obama's selection of Reaganite and Bush family operative Robert Gates to continue as Secretary of War speaks volumes about the new administration's willingness to continue pulling the same wool over the public eyes as Democratic and Republican administrations past have done.  Is this the "change" tens of millions voted for?

Liar, Liar!! Barack Obama's Secretary of War

by BAR managing editor Bruce Dixon

"with less than 5% of the world's population, the US outspends the other 95% of the planet combined on things military"

Until 1947, the United States habitually told the truth about at least one thing. The job title of the Pentagon's highest ranking civilian was the Secretary of War. But the recent slaughter of tens of millions in the Second World War had given the Pentagon's real function a bad name. So Democrat Harry Truman rebranded the Department of War, naming it the Department of Defense.  From that day, the Secretary of War became the Secretary of Defense. War plants, war expenditures and bloodthirsty war industries became more benign-sounding defense plants, the defense expenditures and the patriotic defense industry.

Today, with less than 5% of the world's population, the US outspends the other 95% of the planet combined on things military, including a network of more than 725 bases in a hundred foreign countries. The bucks that pay for US Marines in Somalia, for B-52s in the Indian Ocean, nuclear-armed fleets in the Persian Gulf and much more don't come out of any imperial war budget. They're part of the national defense budget.

In that spirit, the president-elect has named what the media are calling his “national defense team”. The new Secretary of War is the same as the old one. He'll be Robert Gates, a Reaganite and Bush family operative who has headed the Department of War since 2006.

If this were a just society, rather than looking at another year or two in the president's cabinet, Robert Gates would be well into serving a long stretch for war crimes and lying to Congress. It's really that serious. When officials in the CIA and other intelligence agencies, or high ranking military and civilian suits at the Pentagon lie to us, it's not in the same league as a big city mayorfibbing about text messages on his cell phone or how some contract was awarded. When War Department and intelligence officials in and out of uniform lie, it's about who and how many are, have been, or will be killed. They lie about why they died or will die, and at whose hands. They aren't above lying about contracts either.

Robert Gates has been lying about matters of life, death and empire for a long time. A National Security Administration staffer in the Carter administration, Gates appears to have been involved in the October Surprise, helping delay the release of US hostages by Iran in order to damage the re-election chances of his boss  Jimmy Carter in 1980. When Reagan's campaign manager William Casey was tapped to head the CIA, Robert Gates was part of the new team. Casey rewarded Gates by promoting him to head CIA's analytical division and later to deputy CIA director because of his willingness to embellish and fabricate intelligence saying what policymakers wanted to hear. In a recent Baltimore Sun article worth reading in its entirety, Robert Parry quotes former CIA analyst Melvin Goodman as saying

Gates consistently told his analysts to make sure never to ‘stick your finger in the eye of the policymaker.

It didn’t take long for the winds of politicization to blow through the halls of CIA headquarters at Langley, Virginia.

Bill Casey and Bob Gates guided the first institutionalized ‘cooking of the books’ at the CIA in the 1980s, with a particular emphasis on tailoring intelligence dealing with the Soviet Union, Central America, and Southwest Asia,' Goodman wrote.

Casey’s first NIE [National Intelligence Estimate] as CIA director, dealing with the Soviet Union and international terrorism, became an exercise in politicization. Casey and Gates pushed this line in order to justify more U.S. covert action in the Third World.

In 1985, they ordered an intelligence assessment of a supposed Soviet plot against the Pope, hoping to produce a document that would undermine Secretary of State [George] Shultz’s efforts to improve relations with Moscow. The CIA also produced an NIE in 1985 that was designed to produce an intelligence rationale for arms sales to Iran.”

"When congressional Democrats in 1993 refused to pursue investigations of Iran-contra and other off-the-books intelligence operations Gates must have breathed a sigh of relief"

It's pretty certain that Robert Gates has lied each and every time he has been sworn in before Congress. His lies have cost the lives of many tens of thousands, and obscured the reasons for their deaths. When Ronald Reagan declared that Nicaragua, a country with the population of Philadelphia (minus the suburbs) and fewer than two functioning elevators constituted a military threat to the US, this was the work of Robert Gates. The US intervention in Central America cost at least 30,000 lives in Nicaragua alone. Gates was also at the center of US provision of arms and intelligence to both Iraq and Iran as they fought a seven year war that killed two million people. He orchestrated intelligence reports that deliberately exaggerated Soviet military expenditures and threat posture to justify Reagan's rant about meeting the menace of the “Evil Empire” and his unheard of increase in US War Department spending. After serving as CIA director under the first president Bush in 1991 where he remained well into the Clinton administration.

When congressional Democrats in 1993 refused to pursue investigations of Iran-contra and other off-the-books intelligence operations Gates must have breathed a sigh of relief. He remained at CIA until well into Clinton's first year, and eventually sought the help of the Bush family in getting named president of Texas A&M.

The second Bush administration asked Gates to serve on its Iraq Study Commission, which advocated permanent bases, the privatization of Iraqi oil, and the maintenance of tens of thousands of US troops in-country for the foreseeable future. From there, Gates was named deputy, and eventually successor to Donald Rumsfeld as Secretary of War. As late as last year, when Alan Greenspan admitted what everybody has always known, that the Iraq war was about the oil, stupid, Gates ran to the press to say:

I know the same allegation was made about the Gulf War in 1991, and I just don't believe it's true."

"I think that it's really about stability in the Gulf. It's about rogue regimes trying to develop weapons of mass destruction. It's about aggressive dictators," Gates said.

"After all, Saddam Hussein launched wars against several of his neighbors," Gates said. "He was trying to develop weapons of mass destruction."

Sure he's lying. But it's supposed to be OK. Robert Gates is, after all, a lifetime member of the nation's bipartisan foreign policy elite. He could have been just following orders, and his orders at the time were to protect his boss George Bush. Although he took sides against his boss Jimmy Carter back in the day, maybe Gates has learned his lesson. Maybe now the Secretary of War will lie to us with his old Reagan-era enthusiasm on behalf of his new boss Barack Obama. Or maybe not. The question is, whether Robert Gates is lying for his current, his past or his future bosses, as long as his lips are moving in public, who's the winner? Not peace, not democracy. Not change, and certainly not the legacy of Dr. King, whose mantle Barack Obama dons at every opportune moment.

Not a few Obama supporters are wringing their hands at the selection of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. The Secretary of State, according to its own web site, has fewer than 5,000 employees. But the Department of War employs more than two million uniformed personnel, hundreds of thousands of civilians, an undisclosed six figure number of armed mercenaries, and thousands of contractors with millions more employees. The Pentagon disposes of tens or hundreds of billions in secret budgets which are accountable to nobody, not even Congress, and it fields at least half a dozen intelligence agencies, along with a far-flung network of secret prisons and torturers to staff them. It's not hard to see where the real power is, and where it will remain despite the new administration's promise of “change”. The only question remaining is how this vast, unaccountable and fundamentally anti-democratic machinery will be employed by the new administration. Here's a clue.

"Journalist I.F. Stone reminded us half a century ago that 'all governments lie.'"

Millions of Barack Obama's voters are under the impression that he will speedily withdraw US troops from Iraq. For them, the appointment of Robert Gates is not a good sign, but it is consistent with the gap between what Obama's most ardent supporters persuade themselves that they hear, and what the president-elect and his advisors have actually said all along. As the New York Times admitted last week.

...While Mr. Obama’s most heartfelt supporters in the antiwar movement may have heard “end the war” as a promise to end the American troop presence in Iraq in 16 months, the president-elect has spoken only of a timeline for withdrawing combat troops, not all American forces.

Fifteen American combat brigades are in Iraq, but the total number of American troops there amounts to the equivalent of more than 50 brigades, including forces there on missions to support, supply, transport, protect and care for the combat forces, and train and support the Iraqi security forces, which would be expected to continue at least through 2011...

Some Army planners predict that 30,000 to 50,000 — and as many as 70,000 — American troops will remain in support and training missions well into late 2011, and beyond, should the Iraqis invite them.

Pegging the US force in Iraq at 50 brigades leaves out a nearly equivalent number of mercenaries. If their number is only half that of US uniformed troops, we're looking at the equivalent of 75 brigades. President-elect Obama pledges to withdraw 15 of these, and only if conditions permit, if the Iraqis “step up”, if commanders on the ground think it's wise, and so on.

Clearly there will have to be a lot more lies told before this is over. Perhaps the president-elect believes he needs a brazen and proficient lying bureaucrat at the War Department. But is this what the American people need? Is this what they voted for?

Journalist I.F. Stone reminded us a half century ago that “all governments lie”. But chances are, he didn't mean this the way some of the president-elect's supporters will, as a reason to excuse rather than oppose whatever lies our First Black President and his appointees are inclined to tell us --- for our own good, of course. If we still have principles, souls and backbones of our own, we must always question and we can never excuse lies told us for the sake of empire, no matter who tells them.

If any glimmer of an independent movement for peace and justice still exists, it's time for us to engage in our own rebranding exercise. Activists who aim to carry on the work of Dr. King and the movement he led must take the lead in de-legitimizing the institutions that exist to lie and deceive us along with their functionaries. It'll be easy. All we have to do is tell the truth, and demand the truth from our government. As a beginning, we should insist on calling Mr. Robert Gates exactly what he is in all our conversations, our articles, emails and blogs, our ordinary public and private discourse. He is the Secretary of War. And a career liar.

The Empire Project will be Obama's (and our) Albatross

Despite what "moderate" to meager actions Mr. Obama takes to alleviate the economic meltdown, despite what successes are within his reach on the domestic front, his balls-to-the-walls committment to the contrived WOT and the US Empire Project will stanch if not reverse those (probably small) gains.

Check out "Keep the Change: The Empire Beat Goes On" for an overview and links to worthy reads, including essays from Arthur Silber, Matthew Rothschild, and Justin Raimondo

20,000 uniformed troops inside the United States, to "help" local authorities with "domestic emergencies." The prediction of a biological or nuclear attack in American by 2012. As Chris Floyd says, get ready for the sepia-toned edition of GWB and watch the WOT "come home" in more ways than one.

Will Obama be a bigger fool than Bush? What to make of Mumbai

A MUST read: Justin Raimondo, "The Meaning of Mumbai"; or just type in
Here's some of Raimondo's observations:

"The pressure to cement an Indo-American alliance has been growing for quite some time and is slated to accelerate. India's special relationship with Israel, for one thing, is second only to our own. For another, President-elect Obama's promise to escalate the war in Afghanistan and even spread it into Pakistan is congruent with the plans of India's War Party, which is waiting in the wings to take the reins and confront Islamabad.

The argument that we must end the war in Iraq so that we can concentrate on the "real" enemy, the amorphous and exaggerated al-Qaeda, which is supposedly hiding in the wilds of Pakistan's tribal areas, is leading to an even wider, more open-ended conflict, one so combustible that it could spark a nuclear exchange between Pakistan and India.

As bad as George W. Bush was, he never messed up that badly. One can almost hear the collective sigh of relief now that we are approaching the day when an easily-manipulated ignoramus is no longer in charge of American foreign policy. What may be even more dangerous, however, is a very smart president who thinks he and his advisers know more than they actually do."

Lou: I pity the fool, and he is us. Go back and read Floyd's "The Pentagon Plan to Foment Terrorism," written back in 2005!! Excerpt:

"In fact, it's being expanded, as the New Yorker's Seymour Hersh revealed last week. Not only will U.S.-directed agents infiltrate existing terrorist groups and provoke them into action; the Pentagon itself will create its own terrorist groups and "death squads." After establishing their terrorist "credentials" through various atrocities and crimes, these American-run groups will then be able to ally with – and ultimately undermine – existing terrorist groups."

Ahhh.. America the Beautiful...from sea to shining sea.

Btw, Saakashit admitted Georgia invaded S. Ossetia and Abkhazia, did Anderson Cooper or Brokaw ever report that?? Are 90% of Americans still operating under the belief Russia invaded Georgia? Pathetic.

Gates is a mass-murdering war criminal and belongs in the harshest prison for life, as you say.

It's not more complicated than that.

Can you imagine what the poor Nicaraguans must think at this point? As Chalmers Johnson says, it's something of a miracle we aren't experiencing blowback from them and other Central and South Americans...

Your sources are suspect....

What a lot vitriol. Your sources are suspect, your "facts" biased. If these elected officials were as bad as you paint them, they would never have been elected. Just as you never will be elected- anything.
Frankly, without our military might, idiots such as you would never be able to make a living badmouthing the institutions who make your very existence possible.
Very truly yours, M.J. Teague

Here's a few "sources" for you Mr. Teague

Straight from Mr. Karzai's mouth:

Afghan President Hamid Karzai used a visit yesterday by a United Nations delegation to hit out at the international forces over their conduct in the war, expressing disbelief that after seven years "a little force like the Taliban" is continuing to flourish.

But today the Afghan President took his complaints to a new level, publicly lamenting that he was unable to shoot down the US planes which have been bombarding Afghan villages. Karzai added that if he had a rock attached to a piece of spring, he'd use it to try to down the planes, "but that's not in my hands."

Hitting out at the war on terror as "unclear" Karzai criticized "a war which it is unclear what it is for, and whata we are doing" Addressing the media after today's meeting with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer he called for a firm timeline for withdrawal, insisting "this war cannot be endless "this war cannnot be endless and forever and the Afghan nation cannot burn in a war of which the end is not clear," and adding "we did not welcome the international community in Afghanistan so that our lives get worse."

Karzai warned that if a timeline is not set, he feels Afghanistan has "the right to find another solution for peace and security, which is negotiations." He also accused international troops of having set up a parallel government." Wall St. Journal, Nov. 27, 2008

Article: Mumbai photographer: I wish I had a gun not a camera, armed police would not fire back. source, Belfast Telegraph World News. Nov.29, 2008 Quote:

"There were armed policemen hiding all around the station but none of them did anything," he said. "At one point, I ran up to them and told them to use their weapons. I said, 'Shoot them, they're sitting ducks!' but they just didn't shoot back."

Oh yes, I'll feel so much safer when those 20K military personnel are let loose on US streets.

M. J.

M.J., I served in combat in the genocidal war against the Vietnamese people at age 19. The most shameful period of my life. Over 1 million innocent and defenseless Iraqi's have been slaughtered because of racist idiots and cowards like bush, cheney rumsfield and now gates. And let me remind you that 50% of the Iraqi population was 15 and younger before the war started. In other words we are fighting a war against children. Your a punk M.J., like Gates, Cheney, Bush, Rumsfield, and the many other monsters who walk this planet. It will be a great day for humanity when chumps like you are wiped from the face of the earth.

Response to Michael Dawson concerning the Central and South American "blowback": Aren't you informed? The blowback is coming, but it will be more of a backlash. Things are going to start looking really rosy for Bolivia, Brasil, Venezuela, Equador etc. very soon. They, together with the Latinos that are fighting for survival in the US now, will hold us all accountable.

From Douglas Farah, author: The Merchant of Death

interview by Laura Rozen, at MoJo, Sept. 13, 2007:

MJ: Your reporting indicates that Bout has supplied not only the Taliban, Liberia's Charles Taylor, and Congolese warlords, but the U.S. Army and its contractors as well. Can you describe how the U.S. government and U.S. contractors have responded to revelations about who they are doing business with?

DF: The U.S. government response to revelations of the use of Viktor Bout to fly for government contractors in Iraq (not just a few flights, but hundreds, and perhaps a thousand) has been mixed. Bear in mind most of these flights occurred after President Bush had signed an executive order making it illegal to do business with Bout, because he represented a security threat to the United States. The State Department, under a congressional inquiry initiated by Senator Russell Feingold, found it had used Bout companies, acknowledged it, and stopped. Paul Wolfowitz, while at DOD, did not respond to queries for nine months, then acknowledged that DOD contractors had subcontracted to Bout companies. Despite the public revelation, the congressional inquiry, the executive order, and a subsequent Treasury Department order freezing the assets of Bout and his closest associates, the flights continued for many months, at least until the end of 2005. The Air Force cut him off immediately, but other branches of the military continued to use him.

They still have stars in their eyes

Peace and Blessings to Lou, Black Agenda Report and all the people who keep us informed in spite of the mass disinformation campaigns around the world. As I've stated before to brother Lou, et al, reading your responses and discussions on this site is required reading for a growing number of people young and old. MJ offers no counterpoints or information to Lou's post, just the same old "land of the free, home of the brave" rhetoric of those who lack the intellect to debate and discuss the finer points being addressed.

It has been interesting watching Obama assemble his cabinet; it is starting to look like a rerun we've seen before. Those who can't read between the buzzwords of "change" and "yes we can!" still have stars in their eyes; they can't wait to descend on D.C. in January to watch the coronation of President Obama, savior of the free world. Check back with me in 6-12 months and see how much progress has been made on all the lofty campaign promises for the "average" American of any color. The American voter is the equivalent of a battered's shameful to keep expecting your batterer to change his behavior while constantly promising to "do better from now on, I'm sorry for how I've treated you." Pray and work for the best and prepare for whatever. Pawns in the game.

More than 70 serious interventions since 1945, summarized at the second link above. Blum's take:

"The engine of American foreign policy has been fuled not by a devotion to any kind of morality, but rather by the necessity to serve other imperatives, which can be summarized as follows:

*making the world safe for American corporations;
*enhancing the financial statements of defense contractors at home who have contributed generously to members of congress;
*preventing the rise of any society that might serve as a successful example of an alternative to the capitalist model;
*extending political and economic hegemony over as wide an area as possible, as befits a "great power." power."

Ben-Menashe was one of six on Israel's top-secret Joint Committee on Israel-Iran relations, and spent years globe-trotting for them, setting up fronts and transferring millions in cash. In 1980 he saw George Bush meeting in Paris with a high Iranian official, and in 1986 he briefed Bush. In 1981 Robert Gates helped him with his suitcase containing $56 million.

thanks for the compliment..

Nice work penning Gates in.

Yeah, it's like always, you know. The don't never set without a man tellin' a fib. Lies, lies and more lies and morality myths and freedom fictions.
It has become ubiquitous of late ,for the rulers and the fooled-ruled to claim that all the murder, robbery and torture and discrace of a people at the hands of the U. S. Empire is suddenly un-American.
Les' just git on outta der and return to what our nation use ta be!

Some one please tell me when were these characteristic practices ever anything other than absolutey American?

And sooner than later Mr. Obama will take his seat among history's rank and defiled myth perpetrators and then equality will come, finally, to the land of the free.
Lot's a head shakin' goin' on.

Thank you...

Finally, someone speaks the truth. I've become sickened by the white leftists who continue to hail Obama as the savior out of some kind of white guilt. He is what he is: an American politician. No more and no less.

He is not going to bring a better world for the working class. His campaign contributions from big business should be the first tip-off of that. Those people don't hand out the millions without some quid pro quo. He has couched his ideas about race in terms that would make the "welfare queen" myth-makers happy. He has sold out longtime "friends" who dared to speak the truth. He has appointed a man to his transition team who has declared women intellectually genetically inferior to men. His proposed healthcare "reform" does little more than grant the insurance industry more power. His choice for vice-president is hardly a critic of U.S. military intervention. And I'm supposed to believe he's the purveyor of change?

Washington Arrogance has Fomented a Muslim Revolution

by Paul Craig Roberts at, excerpts:

The attack on Mumbai required radicalized Muslims. Radicalized Muslims resulted from the US overthrowing the elected government in Iran and imposed the Shah; from the US stationing troops in Saudi Arabia; from the US invading and attempting to occupy Afghanistan and Iraq, bombing weddings, funerals, and children’s soccer games; from the US violating international and US law by torturing its Muslim victims; from the US enlisting Pakistan in its war against the Taliban; from the US violating Pakistan’s sovereignty by conducting military operations on Pakistani territory, killing Pakistani civilians; from the US government supporting a half century of Israeli ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their lands, towns and villages; from the assault of American culture on Muslim values; from the US purchasing the government of Egypt to act as its puppet; from US arrogance that America is the supreme arbiter of morality.

As Justice Brandeis said, crime is contagious. Government teaches by example, and America’s example is lawlessness. America’s brutal crimes against the Muslim world have invited every Muslim to become a law unto himself – a revolutionary. It is not terror that Washington confronts but revolution.

Investigative journalist John Pilger has shown that the so-called "moral superiority of the West" is a hoax designed to shield from view the self-seeking West’s crimes against humanity.

Obama Vows US Military Rule Over Planet As 1 Million Soldiers To Secure

By: Sorcha Faal, and as reported to her Western Subscribers

The corridors of the Kremlin are reported to be in shock today after
President-Elect Barack Obama in announcing his National Security Team
vowed to his countrymen that he would maintain the United States
Military’s hegemony over our entire Planet during his reign.

With a budget of over $528 billion, which totals more than that of all
the World’s major powers, both East and West, combined, and 761 Military
Bases literally spanning our entire Earth, Russian Economists warn that
by Obama’s vow the United States has given up all hopes of rescuing
their collapsing economy and are, instead, preparing for all out Global

Even worse for the American people is that in Obama’s preparations for
Global War they are to be totally militarized on a scale not seen since
Adolph Hitler and the Nazis militarization of the German peoples during
the 1930’s, and which US Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced last
week in his “Total Force Integration Policy” that abolishes both the
United States National Guard and Reserve Forces and the 1878 Posse
Comitatus Act and will lead to over 1 Million US Soldiers being
stationed in the American Homeland to ‘control’ their own citizens.

Russian Intelligence Analysts however, point out in their reports that
these latest moves by Obama further confirm the United States plan for
the use of brute military force to impose upon all of us their long
planned for New World Order and is being ‘managed’ on the American side
by their former Secretary of State, and acknowledge International War
Criminal, Henry Kissinger who is represented in the new Obama
Administration by soon to be US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner who
began his ascent to power from Kissinger Associates in the 1980’s.

Forgotten by the American people are the warnings of their ancestral
leaders about these Globalist monsters that have sought for centuries to
enslave our entire World, and who President Andrew Jackson spewed
against in 1832 by stating:

“Gentlemen, I have had men watching you for a long time, and I am
convinced that you have used the funds of the bank to speculate in the
breadstuffs of the country. When you won, you divided the profits
amongst you, and when you lost, you charged it to the bank. You tell me
that if I take the deposits from the bank and annul its charter, I shall
ruin ten thousand families. That may be true, gentlemen, but that is
your sin! Should I let you go on, you will ruin fifty thousand families,
and that would be my sin! You are a den of vipers and thieves. I intend
to rout you out, and by the eternal God, I will rout you out.”

President Jackson fortunately, was able to protect his young American
Nation from these Globalist predators and abolished their planned
Central Banking System stating that:

It concentrated the nation's financial strength in a single institution.

It exposed the government to control by foreign interests.

It served mainly to make the rich richer.

It exercised too much control over members of Congress.

It favored northeastern states over southern and western states

Today’s Americans, sadly, have not only forgotten the warnings of
President Jackson but have, literally, enslaved themselves, their
children and all of their future to their Central Bank known as the US
Federal Reserve System, and which these deluded people don’t even
realize is a private bank that has absolutely no regard for them at all
and will continue stealing from them until there is nothing left.

Even worse, these Americans don’t even realize how monstrous the shadow
rulers of the lives are, and which no better example can be given than
the aforementioned Henry Kissinger’s statements to his Thailand
counterpart in 1975 regarding the genocidal Khmer Rouge leadership of
Cambodia which exterminated nearly 2 million of its own citizens, and
which he stated:

“You should also tell the Cambodians that we will be friends with them.
They are murderous thugs, but we won't let that stand in our way. We
are prepared to improve relations with them.”

How wise it would be for these American people to remember the words of
President Woodrow Wilson who in warning his people of the “invisible
empire has been set up above the forms of democracy” stated that “a
little group of willful men, representing no opinion but their own, have
rendered the great government of the United States helpless and
contemptible” .

I think you'll find that this site is a little too credible to be getting in to that wack ass shyt.

Here is the link again and the rest of the article. Copy and pas

How wise it would be for these American people to remember the words of President Woodrow Wilson who in warning his people of the “invisible empire has been set up above the forms of democracy” stated that “a little group of willful men, representing no opinion but their own, have rendered the great government of the United States helpless and contemptible”.

How wiser still for them to remember Wilson’s greatest warning about who really controls the United States: “Since I entered politics, I have chiefly had men's views confided to me privately. Some of the biggest men in the U.S., in the field of commerce and manufacturing, are afraid of somebody, are afraid of something. They know that there is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they had better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it.”

But, and sadly, to those like us, both past and present, attempting to warn these peoples of the catastrophes to come they listen not and continue being led upon a path that can only lead to their complete enslavement and ultimate destruction.

Thank you!

Hi, I'm a white guy, and it was refreshing to read this article.

All my friends are white liberals, and they're all patting themselves on the back and happy about Obama getting elected. It's been freaking me out, because it's like they didn't listen to what he was saying - more war Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan; lip service for social development; continued hegemony for the elite business class. And so on. Basically, it's Clinton v2, which is bad news for the world.

If I said anything critical about Obama's politics (not even his character, I rarely if ever care about a politician's character), I would get nasty looks and comments, accusing me of being some racist creep. It got to me, that maybe there's some racist hidden thought making me think critically of Obama. I didn't think there was, but I had to be concerned about it. To read people at BAR are also critical for the same reasons as I am, makes me feel free to openly voice my criticisms again.

Another thing, people keep saying it's racist to assume Obama ought to care about black people simply because he's part black. It is true that putting assumptions on people to behave a certain way because of their race is racist, I agree. However, does no one think the other way, that the fact that white presidents of the past have neglected black peoples in America is racist? If Obama's going to just perpetuate the same racist politics, can we not hold him accountable to that? He ought to care about black people, not because he's black, but because he's the president.

Hey Jeff, you might want to stick to debating the policies rather than whether or not Obama cares about black people.
If you're still interested in racial politics, you might want to check out

It'll keep you busy with some of the underlying assumptions you have there.
Take care.

Thank you for the link. I have read it and will keep reading. I appreciate you taking the time, because honestly, there's no one around me that I can talk to.

To be clear, I don't consider myself good or bad. I don't want unity. I don't want harmony. Not unless there's justice first. Any unity and harmony that exists without justice is a lie.

Ditto the Policies

Critical thinking persons shouldn't give a shit about a person's race viz a viz their policies, which is not the same as our racial experiences informing our (ever developing) insights, and opinions. For the record, no critical thinker is going to give Obama a break because he's "Black" anymore than one should mute criticism of Hillary because she's a women. Those two are birds of a feather, btw.

Jeff, some of the most passionate, angry, insightful, darkly humorous websites I visit are written by Whites, for instance Arthur Silber at and Chris Floyd at speak truth to power on a par parallel to BAR, sometimes even more passionately. Silber is gay, for whatever the hell that's worth.

Jeff, you are not alone in your questions and concerns about "perpetual war" and the doom and gloom that spells for our nation and the globe, check out Silber and Floyd if you desire validation from someone White, their passion will empower you, also visit and websites, you'll be amazed at the world class reporting and analysis there, stuff you won't EVER get watching the Today Show, Anderson Cooper, or Olbermann and Maddow for that matter. Think about this Jeff,..

Well Said, Jeff Cruler - I Too Have Been A Victimized By The Oba

I agree with you! I am a black woman, and I can't even criticize Barack Obama's policies without being denounced as some sort of a self-hating Negro.

While Barack Obama was not around to vote for the "war" in Iraq, he voted 'YaY' to appropriate billions of dollars to continue to fund the United State's imperialistic endeavors in the Middle East.

Barack Obama supported an anti-consumer bill limiting class action lawsuits against corporate abuse.

Barack Obama supported the highly unpopular Wall Street Bailout. Moreover, he, being a typical Democrat, keeps talking about "helping the middle class," but we see nothing so far, even though he's been in the Senate long enough prove he's really about CHANGE.

The fact of the matter is, Presidents are merely puppets of the global elite, and nothing else. And the only thing Obama, as president-elect, will change is his underwear.

History has proven over and over again that any bit of CHANGE comes from the grassroots, not from politicians.

Good job bigshorty. Keep up the good work Black Agenda Report.

The gingerbread man is in the White House playing musical chairs. Only inside - the - beltway elites are allowed to play. The new world order is still in command.

Hope and Change, Change and Hope are still on the corner in the South Side of Chicago where Obama left them.

The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Oh say can you see the black face in the high place welcoming Bush 4, Clinton 3,and Reagan 3 back into the White House? Yes WE Can!!!

Baraka, hope for Americans NOT Afrikans

A lot been written about about Obama's change policy and this thing HOPE FOR AFRIKANS. I am an AFRIKAN residing in Afrika, i honestly do not see anyways in which Obama could be beneficial for the afrikan continent.

AMERICA needed change and AFRIKA needs to break away from the western-hold. Obama is not AFRIKA's hope but our downfall
